Biography

Elsie was born April 28, 1911. She was the daughter of Jonathan Alexander and Hetta Thornburg. She passed away in October 1, 1997 in Anderson, IN.

"Aunt Elsie" was a school teacher in Kansas and Indiana, teaching a total of 50 years - partially full-time, some part-time - as I once figured. She was my teacher in First, Third, Seventh and Eighth grades. She enjoyed and taught pastel painting with colored chalk for Art, as well as teaching all the subjects and grades, at several one-room rural schools in KS. She was my mother's sister and my sister Evelyn-Ward 220 and I were chosen to be the flower girls in her wedding. I lived with her the summer before entering Anderson College (now University) in Anderson, Indiana as she helped me get my first full-time office job which continued while I was attending college part time for the first 2.5 years.

Elsie had two adopted daughters Joyce Ann (Alexander) Zimmerman (July 29, 1937-March 21,2020, adopted in 1954) and Edna Mae Alexander (Sept 5, 1938 to April 22, 2017 - adopted Feb 13, 1954). Joyce became a nurse and Edna became a school teacher. ^[1]

It might be of interest to know that Elsie's maiden name was Alexander in Kansas and she married an Alexander from Indiana. So technically her name is Elsie Pearl Alexander Alexander.
