Biography

Clarissa Alford was born around 08 Sep 1791, in Vergennes, Addison, Vermont, United States, and died on 07 April 1865, at Cambridge, Crawford, Pennsylvania, United States. [1] She was the daughter of Rev Oliver Alford (abt 1767-abt 1845) & Lovina Porter (abt 1769-abt 1834). [2] Oliver and Lovina had at least 13 children. [1]

  1. Ira Alford (abt 1789-abt 1858)
  2. Theodosia Alford (abt 1790-abt 1881)
  3. Clarissa Alford (abt 1791-abt 1865)
  4. Lovina Alford (abt 1794-abt 1795)
  5. Oliver Alford (abt 1795-1859)
  6. Lovina Alford (abt 1797-abt 1814)
  7. Rebecca Alford (abt 1797-abt 1868)
  8. Dr Hiram Alford MD (abt 1800-abt 1884)
  9. Rosetta Alford (abt 1802-1879)
  10. Martin Alford (abt 1804-abt 1883)
  11. Louise W Alford (abt 1806-abt 1840)
  12. Dr Melancthon W Alford MD, LLD (abt 1810-1873)
  13. Rev Loyal Adolphus Alford MD, DD, LLD (abt 1814-abt 1883)

Clarissa was married on 11 June 1807, to Richard Gage (abt 1786-1870). They left Vermont several years later, around 1816, for Cambridge, Erie, Pennsylvania, United States. The marriage ended with her death 07 April 1865. [1] He died five years later on in Mar 1870. [3] Clarissa & Richard had at least 12 children. [1]

  1. Peter A Gage (1808-1894) was born on 14 Jun 1808 at Vergennes, Addison, Vermont, United States, and died on 17 Oct 1894 at Cambridge City, Pennsylvania, United States, at the age of 86. [1] [4] Note that the town Cambridge is currently Cambridge Springs (1897), [5] and that there is no Cambridge City in Pennsylvania, so at the time, it would have been either Cambridgeboro, Crawford, Pennsylvania, United States (1866-1896) or Cambridge Township, Crawford, Pennsylvania, United States (1852). Peter was a Farmer. He married Betsey Durham, on 10 May 1832, with whom he had eight children: John D Gage, Mary J Gage, Peter A Gage, James R Gage, William L Gage, Perry H Gage, Alice I or Allis Gage and Etta L or Eliza Gage. Of these eight, two do not appear in the censuses (John & Peter), and the rest are in the 1850, 1860 or 1870 censuses; a ninth child, Susan, appears only in 1860. [6]
  2. Amelia or Aurelia Gage (1810-1874) was born on 09 Feb 1810 at Vergennes, Addison, Vermont, United States, and died on 11 Apr 1874 at Cambridge, Crawford, Pennsylvania, United States at the age of 64. She married William Mitchell. [1] Her name is Amelia in the 1870 Census [5] and Aurelia S in Find a Grave. The death date on her tombstone is barely legible, but could be 12 Apr 1874. In any event, she is buried in Mitchell Cemetery at Cambridge Springs, Crawford, Pennsylvania, as is her husband, who was born in Canada around 1801 and died in Pennsylvania around 1880. Amelia & William had at least five children: Clarissa Ann Mitchell (Lee, 1836 - 1916), Melancthon Mitchell (1840 - 1919), Loran M Mitchell (1845 - 1907), Sylvester M Mitchell (1850 - 1923) and Perry Mitchell (1853- ). [7] [8]
  3. Cyrus P Gage (1812-1843) was born on 15 Jan 1812 at Ferrisburg, Addison, Vermont, United States, and died on 30 on April 1843 at Union City, Erie, Pennsylvania, United States. He married Esther Stowe who died on 10 Jun 1873. Both are buried at Mitchell Cemetery at Cambridge Springs, Crawford, Pennsylvania, United States. [1] [9] Cyrus and Esther had at least four children: Mary Gage, Phoebe Gage, Cyrus Montgomery Gage and Rebecca S Gage (Fullerton, 1843-1893). Esther married William McKinley (1794 - 1872) after Cyrus' death, and they had six more children: Jane E McKinley (Burger, (1849-1925), John Ralston McKinley (1845-1865), Nancy Ellen McKinley (1850-1861), Alexander McKinley (1853-1913), Sarah Priscilla McKinley and William McKinley (1859-1934). [1] [10]
  4. Stephen P Gage (1813-1873) was born on 17 Oct 1813, at Ferrisburgh, Addison, Vermont, United States, and died on 31 May 1874, at Colombia County, Wisconsin, United States. He married Lovina Maria Baird. She was born in Massachusetts, United States, and died on 03 Oct 1889. Both spouses are buried at Silver Lake Cemetery, Portage, Colombia, Wisconsin, United States. [11] [12] Nine different children appear in the 1860-1870 Censuses and Stephen's Find a Grave entry: Wheeler W Gage (1831 - 1905), Myron Gage (1839-1891), Richard Gage (1841-), William Gage (1843-), Julia Gage (Williams, 1847- ), Peter Gage (1852-1930 ), Lucy Gage (1851-1862 ), Lovina Gage (1856- ), Oliver Gage (1858- ), Stephen Gage (1863). [1] [13] Stephen and his wife appear in the 1855 Wisconsin census, as do his siblings, Harriet, Walter R, and Orange, and their spouses. His brother Horatio, who supposedly traveled with Walter and Harriet to Wisconsin in 1854, is conspicuously missing. [14]
  5. Caroline L Gage (1815-1888) was born on 19 Dec 1815 at Vergennes, Addison, Vermont, United States, and died on 10 Feb 1888 at Ashland, Saunders, Nebraska, United States at the age of 73. At the age of six weeks (1816), her parents left Vermont for Pennsylvania, and after a journey of about four weeks they arrived in the dense wilderness of Crawford county, where she lived until she was married to Timothy Wooden Butler on 01 Jan 1873. After their marriage, the couple went to Erie county, Pennsylvania. The censuses located for them, in 1850 & 1870, show their residence in Venago, Erie, Pennsylvania, United States. They moved to Nebraska on 17 March 1881. [15] Timothy Wooden Butler was born on 23 Jul 1815 and died on 02 Aug 1892, also in Ashland. [16] The Alford History mentions that he held many positions as Justice of the Peace, Judge of the County Court and that he was "an uncle to C L Alford and a brother to his mother and a cousin to Hon Benj F Butler of national fame" It is not clear who C L Alford was, but Benjamin F Bulter is best known as a political major general of the Union Army during the American Civil War, and for his leadership role in the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson. [1] [17] Four children appeared in the 1850 census, two girls who were both dead by the time their mother died, and who do not appear in the 1870 census, Adelia (1838- ) & Diana (1839- ) & and two sons, Levi (1841- ) & Richard (1843- ), who both resided in Nebraska as well. [18]
  6. Walter Roberts Gage (1818-1869) was born on 23 May 1818, at Cambridge City, Pennsylvania. Note that the town Cambridge is currently Cambridge Springs (1897), [5] and that there is no Cambridge City in Pennsylvania, so at the time, it would have been Crawford county (1800) because Cambridge, Crawford, Pennsylvania, United States (1822-1865) was not formally established until after his birth. He died on 19 Aug 1869 at Capioma, Nemaha, Kansas, United States, at the age of 51. [1] [19] According to the Alford History he married Lovina Valentine on 01 Jan 1847, [1] However, this timeline does not fit in with the account given in his Find a Grave entry. In Find a Grave, his wife's name is given as Lavinia Ostrand, born in Barcelona, Chautauqua, New York, United States. Note that she is referred to as "Lovina", not as "Lavinia" in the censuses located. They married in Erie County, Pennsylvania, United States, and he was a Farmer. They lived eight years in Gowanda, Erie/Cattaraugus, New York, and seven in Marcellon, Colombia, Wisconson. They went to Capioma, Nemaha, Kansas in 1856, lived there three years on a new farm or claim south of the village, and in 1859 built in Capioma the Gage House, which Walter Gage ran as a hotel until his death, in August, 1869. He was a Republican, and served as postmaster, Notary Public, and Justice of the Peace many years. In 1876 the hotel and contents burned down, a total loss, and on the site his wife erected a cottage. [19] Counting backwards from their arrival in Kansas in 1856, the 15 years they spent together between New York and Wisconsin, places the marriage date at 1840-1841 at the latest. Census information was found for them in 1855, in Scott, Colombia, Wisconsin, and in 1875, 1880 in Capioma, Nehmaha, Kansas. [20] [21] Walter is mentioned in his brother Horatio Nelson's Find a Grave entry which gives 1854 as the date he, his brother Horatio and his sister Harriet and her husband, Daniel Smith, moved to Wisconsin, contradicting the Alford History which infers that Walter went there from New York around 1849 and stayed there until 1856. It also states that the three families went to Kansas in 1857, not in 1856. [22] In any case, Walter and his wife appear in the 1855 Wisconsin census, as do his siblings, Stephen P, Harriet, and Orange, and their spouses. His brother Horatio, who supposedly traveled with him and Harriet to Wisconsin in 1854, is conspicuously missing. [14] Their children have not been investigated; the Find a Grave entry states Walter left eight at his death, three of whom appeared in the 1880 Census: Charles Stoten Gage (1845 - 1926), Adelia or Alice Adele Gage (Vilott, (1846 - 1901), Burton Gage (since deceased), H C Gage, WR Gage (1850- ), William D or Will Gage (1860- ) , Minnie S Gage (1863- ), Effie Gage (1865- ). There are another three in the entry, ostensibly deceased before their father's demise, making a total of at least 11 children in the family: Bruce C Gage( - 1861), Richard B Gage ( - 1868), Addie Arabella Gage ( -1869). [1]
  7. Oliver Alford Gage (1819-1892) was born on 01 Nov 1819 at Cambridge City, Pennsylvania and died at the same place on 08 May 1892 at the age of 73. Note that the town Cambridge is currently Cambridge Springs (1897), [5] and that there is no Cambridge City in Pennsylvania, so at the time of his birth, it would have been Crawford county (1800) because Cambridge, Crawford, Pennsylvania, United States (1822-1865) was not formally established until after his birth, and at the time of his death it would have been Cambridgeboro, Crawford, Pennsylvania, United States (1866-1896) or Cambridge Township, Crawford, Pennsylvania, United States (1852). [1] He married Mary Greaves (1823-1872) on 01 Jan 1847 and Augusta Sharp on 01 Feb 1883. Four children appear in the 1870 census, two of whom are also included in Oliver's Find a Grave entry: Clara or Clarrissa Gage (1848- ), James S Gage (1849-1920), Delia or Adelia Gage (1854 - 1877) and Stevens Gage (1857- ). [23] [24]
  8. Harriet Gage (1821-1857) was born on 06 Apr 1821 at Cambridge City, Pennsylvania. Note that the town Cambridge is currently Cambridge Springs (1897), [5] and that there is no Cambridge City in Pennsylvania, so at the time of her birth, it would have been Crawford county (1800) because Cambridge, Crawford, Pennsylvania, United States (1822-1865) was not formally established until after. She died on 25 Oct 1857 at Capioma, Nemaha, Kansas, United States, at the age of 36. [1] She married Daniel Smith. Harriet's husband is mentioned in her brother Horatio Nelson's Find a Grave entry which gives 1854 as the date her brothers, Horatio and Walter, and she and her husband, Daniel Smith, moved to Wisconsin, contradicting the Alford History which infers that Walter went there from New York around 1849 and stayed there until 1856. It also states that the three families went to Kansas in 1857, not in 1856. [22] In any case, Harriet and her husband appear in the 1855 Wisconsin census, as do her siblings, Stephen P, Walter R, and Orange, and their spouses. Her brother Horatio, who supposedly traveled with her and Walter to Wisconsin in 1854, is conspicuously missing. [14]
  9. Rebecca Gage (1823-1823) was born on 17 Mar 1823 at Cambridge City, Pennsylvania and died on 06 Sep 1823, presumably in the same place. Note that the town Cambridge is currently Cambridge Springs (1897), [5] and that there is no Cambridge City in Pennsylvania, so at the time, it would have been Cambridge, Crawford, Pennsylvania, United States (1822-1865). [1]
  10. Horatio Nelson Gage (1825-1878) was born around 18 Aug 1825 in Pennsylvania, United States and died about 23 Sept 1878 at the age of 53 at his ranch, "Gages Station", in what is now the site of the Gage Pioneer Memorial in Montana. Both he and his son Stephen are buried there. An interesting, although contradictory, account of his death can be found at his Find a Grave entry. One of the sources included, a newspaper, the Rocky Mountain Husbandman, Diamond City, Montana, 29 Sept 1878, states that the sugar used in his drink in the morning (coffee?), seems to have been poisoned and he died after terrible convulsions and suffering at midday. His daughter was also poisoned but survived. However, a second source, an excerpt included in the entry from a "History of Montana" (no further publishing data or details are given), indicates that he died of ulceration of the lungs and does not mention a possible poisoning. The same account goes on to say that he lived in Cambridge Township until 1854, after which he, his brother, Walter, and his sister Harriet and her husband, Daniel Smith, immigrated to Wisconsin. It was in Wisconsin that he met Elizabeth "Eliza" Blood (1833-1883), born in Pennsylvania, whom he married in the fall of 1855. In 1857 the three families moved to Kansas. In the spring of 1860 he went to Denver, Colorado, where he engaged in the stock business for a few years. He felt Colorado was becoming too thickly settled, rounded up his herd and started off for the Yellowstone country in Montana, locating in the valley in 1874. Although he had horses stolen and cattle killed by Indians, he stayed on and improved his ranch. After his death in 1878, his wife stayed on the ranch, raising stock and farming. [22] They had at least seven children who all have entries in Find a Grave: Stephen Gage (1857 - 1879), who died shortly after his father, when he and another person, Tommy Thompson, were driving a small herd of cattle across the Yellowstone River and were swept away from their horses and drowned, [25] Dora Mae Gage (Morris, 1860 - 1914), [26] Josephine Gage (Bartlett, 1864 - 1944), [27] Clarissa "Clara" Gage (1866 - 1881), who died of diphtheria while attending St. Vincent's Academy in Helena, [28] Horatio Gage (1870 - 1890), who died in a strange fatality when two brothers were playing with a supposedly empty revolver, that went off, killing him instantly, [29] Mary Edna (1871 - 1883), who died of diptheria while at school, like her sister Clara, [30] and Montgomery Gage (1876 - 1876), who fell out of the Gage wagon and was instantly killed when run over by the wagon wheel, en route to Montana from Colorado in 1876; this last date may not be correct, as according to Horatio's (father's) entry, the family went to Montana in 1874. [31] Horatio's wife, Elizabeth "Eliza", died five years after he, in 1883. [32] Another child, John, born around 1873 in Wyoming, appears in the 1880 census as Eliza's son, along with his siblings (except for Stephen who died the year before). [33] This particular census is interesting because of several details. It states Eliza's occupation as "Keeps Hotel". Whether this was a sole enterprise or a side-business apart from the raising of stock and farming mentioned above, is not clear. Surprisingly, it lists her situation as "Divorced" and not "Widowed". Horatio died in 1878 and his last son was born in 1876, so the divorce presumably took place in the period 1875-1878. Apart from these tidbits, the birth places of the 7 children in the census are given: all were born in Colorado except for Dora, who was born in Kansas, and as stated, John, who seems to have been born in Wyoming.
  11. Julia Ann Gage (1827-1900) was born on 27 Sept 1827 at Cambridge City, Pennsylvania. Note that the town Cambridge is currently Cambridge Springs (1897), [5] and that there is no Cambridge City in Pennsylvania, so at the time, it would have been Cambridge, Crawford, Pennsylvania, United States (1822-1865). [1] She died around 15 Jan 1900 in Titusville, Crawford, Pennsylvania, United States. She married Arvin Miller Edwards (1828-1894). The couple had at least five children: Alice Marie Miller (Orwig, 1850 - 1912), Emory Adelbert Miller (1855 - 1931), Dwight E Miller (1857 - 1944), Herman Clinton Miller (1859 - 1948), Herbert Sylvester Miller (1859 - 1939). [34]
  12. Orange Montgomery Gage (1831-1914) was born on 18 Nov 1831 at Cambridge City, Pennsylvania. Note that the town Cambridge is currently Cambridge Springs (1897), [5] and that there is no Cambridge City in Pennsylvania, so at the time, it would have been Cambridge, Crawford, Pennsylvania, United States (1822-1865). [1] He died on 06 Oct 1914 and is buried at Woodlawn, Nemaha, Kansas, United States, presumably where he died. [35] He married three times, first to Susan Elvira Smith (1837-1866) on 29 Sept 1852, after to Susan McElroy (1848-1885) on 03 July 1868, and last to Alice Adelia Manville (1850-1920) on 05 Mar 1889. He had at least nine children, four with each of his first two wives and one with the last: Viola Medora Gage (Shiffer, 1856 - 1929), Henry D Gage (1860 - 1903), Adah Montes Gage (Myers, 1862 - 1937), Forest Gage (1866 - 1869), George Richard Gage (1870 - 1929), Orange Monta Gage (1872 - 1914), Caramitta Gage (Allan, 1879 - 1959), Clara Leone Gage (Brinkworth, 1884 - 1958), Loren M Gage (1894 - 1981). Orange and his first wife appear in the 1855 Wisconsin census, as do his siblings and their spouses, Stephen P, Harriet and Walter R. His brother Horatio, who supposedly traveled with Walter and Harriet to Wisconsin in 1854, is conspicuously missing. [14]

Clarissa appears by name in the 1850 census:

20 September 1850 in Rockdale, Crawford, Pennsylvania, United States, "Clarrissa Gage", 59 yrs., born in Vermont, with her husband "Richard Gage", 64 yrs., born in Vermont, Carpenter, with 2 sons [36]
