Biography

Roll Alfrey was born on October 3, 1861, in Rowan County, Kentucky. He was the son of Thompson Alfrey and Harriett Jones. He married Sarah Ann Sally Foster in 1880. They were farmers and nine children during their marriage. He died on December 27, 1936, in his hometown at the age of 75, and was buried there.

Uncle Rall lived on the ridge, up from the Charity school house. We always had good times when we went to visit them. Aunt Sally was the fastest apple peeler I have ever seen. She kept guinea hens, and they could make plenty of noise. Bats flew around the chimney in the evenings but I wasn't afraid of them.

Uncle Rall was a hard-shelled Baptist preacher. He married Addie and Bill Kane. I just loved Addie, and I thought she was so pretty. I was too young to remember the wedding.

The first wedding that I remember seeing was when Uncle Rall married Clell Igo and Nettie, Uncle Harry's daughter. She was about fifteen years old. Isa and I went to Yale with her to get material for her wedding dress. She made her wedding clothes herself. Uncle Rall married them after the church services at Charity.
