Chester was born on October 11, 1897 in Clear field, KY to Harvey Newton Alfrey and Nelle Anne "Nellie" McKenzie. He married Chloe Dee Amburgey on October 28, 1915 in Rowan County, KY. They had 5 children. He passed away on July 20, 1987 in Morehead, KY. He was buried in Caudill Cemetery in Morehead, KY.
