Johannis married his first wife circa 1730 in Germany. Before he emigrated, he lived at Rottenstein, Wurtemburg, Baden. He emigrated to America in 1740 aboard the 'Fane' from Cowes, England to Philadelphia. Some accounts have his sons Jacob and Martin emigrating with him, while other records show them arriving later.
He settled in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, where he married his wife Catherina in 1745. They moved to Albany circa 1751. Around 1762, the family moved to Tryon Co., New York.
While many of his children moved to Canada during the American Revolution, Johannis seems to have stayed in New York.
