Archibald was born in 1826. He was the son of Archibald Alison and Elizabeth Glencairn Tytler 1799–1874. Siblings include Frederick Montagu Alison 1836–1872.

Spouse: Jane Rodger Black 1838–1909, father James Black, Dalmonoch (m. 1858). They had two sons and four daughters, including: Randal Frederick Alison 1864–1897.

Archibald served in the British Army. Commands held: Highland Brigade Deputy Adjutant-General in Ireland (1874-1877) Staff College (1878) Intelligence Department at the War Office (1878-1882) British Troops in Egypt Aldershot Division Military Member of the Council of India (1889)

In 1858, Lt.-Col. Archibald married Jane Black in Glasgow. They had at least six children.

He passed away in 1907. Address: 93 Eaton Place, London S.W.

The family shares a headstone in Edinburgh's Dean Cemetery. It reads:
