James Alison (or Allison) was born about 1812 at Leith, details unknown. He married Jane Skeoch Smith and they had 4 known children. They were shown in the 1851 UK census at Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, and 1861 census at Stranraer, Wigtownshire - if indeed these are the same people. Identification is uncertain.

Both spellings - Alison and Allison - were found without consistency, maybe due to someone's horrible handwriting.

  • 1851 UK census, Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, Scotland
  • 1861 UK census, Stranraer, Wigtownshire, Scotland
