Born about 1822 at Kilbowie in Dunbartsonshire, Helen was the daughter of John and Mary Allan. Kilbowie was a group of four farms about one km north of, but now a central part of Clydebank, a town on the north bank of the River Clyde west of Glasgow. Her father John was a quarryman, and an 1896 Ordnance Survey map shows an old quarry right at Kilbowie - most likely where he worked.
Helen made her way to Glasgow where she married John Cochrane in Nov. 1841. They welcomed six daughters at their home, some of whom died young.
John was a victualler or grocer's salesman and was described as a storeman in 1861 - perhaps he had his own grocery store. He was originally from Eaglesham in Renfrewshire, south of Glasgow.
The Cochrane family lived in Calton, Glasgow in 1851, moving before 1861 to Anderston, just west of Glasgow town centre. Their home was on Cameron Court in the 1860s and 70s, moving to 61 Richard St. by 1881. Their daughter Margaret and her Wilson family resided with them in the 1870s and 80s.
In December 1881 Helen was widowed. She eventually went to live with her daughter Mary Thomson's family in Partick, where she spent her remaining days. [1]
