Biography

John was born in 1930. He was the son of Walter Allan and Julia Noble. He passed away in 2016.

Early Life: He was born on July 22, 1930, in Blanding, Utah, the third and youngest son of Walter Franklin and Julia Troward Noble Allan. During his childhood, the family moved back and forth between Blanding and Salt Lake City, Utah, spending many of their summers at the Allan Family Ranch located between Monticello and Blanding, where his father was homesteading. Following the death of his father in 1942, the family returned to Salt Lake City, where he continued his education and graduated from West High School in 1949. He was active in school sports including basketball, tennis and track where he won medals.

Life's Work/Service/Interests: In 1950, John accepted a call to serve as an LDS missionary in the Eastern States Mission. Upon release in 1952, he started to attend college at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. In 1953, he was drafted into the United States Army where he was assigned as a Military Policeman in Vienna, Austria. While there, he helped raise $2,000 towards the first LDS chapel there in Austria. After his return to the US in 1954, he attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, then continued his education at the University of Utah and later, Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey.

He held several positions throughout his career at Kennecott Copper, the US Forest Service, as a high school and college educator and in research. He was an accomplished botanist and environmentalist, earning his doctorate degree from Brigham Young University in 1977. While studying in Provo, he met Elsie Brady and they married six months later on June 7, 1955, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

He loved the beauty of nature whether it was in the wilds of the mountains, deserts or in his own backyard. After retirement, he enjoyed the pursuit of his own family history and along with his wife, did volunteer work at the BYU Genealogical Library. He also took pride in planting and nurturing a large vegetable garden to help provide food for his family. John Stevens Allan passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of June 5, 2016, while convalescing at Orchard Park Rehab Center in Orem, Utah. He was 85.
