ALLAN.—On the 17th May, at Porter-street, Parkside, John Reid Allan, formerly of S. A. Government Printing Office; the beloved, husband of Annie Davidson Allan, aged 85 years. Melbourne papers please copy.
The late Mr. John Reid Allan, whose death at Parkside at the advanced age of 85 was announced on Tuesday, was an Edinburgh man, and he arrived in this colony in March, 1865. He was a printer by trade, and first obtained employment at The Advertiser office, subsequently joining the staff of the Government Printing Office, where he remained for a number of years. On leaving there he drew his compensation and opened a secondhand bookshop in King William street, in connection with which he became well known. Many years ago Mr. Allan was a contributor to The Advertiser and to Pasquin, and in addition he published in pamphlet form satirical verses on political questions of the day.
