Biography

Isabella Allan was born in 1810 in Horsham, Sussex, England, the daughter of James Allan and Agnes Allan (see note below). On 05 Dec 1830 Hugh, a Collier from Parkhead, married Isabella Brock (see note below), also residing in Parkhead[1]. Hugh and Isabella had at least 10 children - James, Elizabeth, Margaret, John, Hugh, Agnes, Thomas, Robert, 2nd Agnes, Allan.

In the 1851 census, Hugh, a Coal Miner, and Isabella are at Oawood (Dawood?) Lands Of Woodhall in Bothwell with their children James, John, Hugh, Thomas, Robert and Agnes[2]. Since Agnes is age 1, I am assuming the first little girl named Agnes has passed away but I cannot find her death record. However, it would be before 1855 so it may not have been recorded. In the 1861 census, at 41 Sunnyside Dr in Wishaw, Hugh age 52 and Isabella, age 51, are in Wishaw with children John 24 Parkhead, Hugh 19, Thomas 15, Robert 13, Agnes age 10 born British Home, Allan 7, and grandchildren George -4 and Hugh Murray age 2[3]. George and Hugh Murray are the children of their daughter Elizabeth.

On 13 Oct, 1862 Isabella applied for Poor Relief from the Cambusnethan Parochial Board. She indicated her husband had deserted her. She was living at 42 Sunnyside Row at the time. She also applied for Poor Relief in 1865, still at the same address. Am guessing husband Hugh got back together with Isabella and family because on 06 Feb 1868 he applied for Poor Relief while living at 22 Russell St in Wishaw and indicated he was wholly disabled due to Asthma. Isabella applied on 21 Jun 1870 from the same address and they are living together in the 1871 census.

In the 1871 census Hugh, a Coal Miner, and Isabella both age 61 are living at 4 Smellie's Land in Wishaw with their son Allan 18, and grandsons George 15 and Hugh Murray 14[4]. Isabella applied for Poor Relief on 05 Mar 1872. At this time she indicated she had no home. On 24 Sep 1872 Hugh filed for poor relief while living at Smellie's Land on Stewarton St. and again on 24 Jan 1873 while at 4 Smellie's Land and Stewarton St. Isabella's husband Hugh died 15 Apr 1873. On 16 Sep 1874, while living on the corner of Thornlie St., Isabella filed for Parochial Relief as well as on 30 May 1877, and 11 Jan 1878 and 7 Nov 1879. In 1877 she said she had no home yet again and seeing that just broke my heart, poor woman. In 1879 she was living at 59 Stewarton St in Wishaw.

In the 1881 census, Bella Cummerford, age 69 b abt 1812, a widower, is living with her daughter Agnes Cumerford, age 29, and Agnes’ husband Charles Morrison at 1 Bells Rows in Cambusnethan[5]. Isabella again filed for poor relief in June 1886. At this time Isabella was living at 19 Russell St in Wishaw. She did not know where her son James and his family lived, her sons John, Hugh and Thomas, who each had families of their own, were helping her a little bit financially. Her son Allan, who also had a family, had been off work for 4 months. Her daughter Elizabeth was in Leith with a family and her daughter Agnes was married with four children. This is but a small taste of what life must have been like in those days. In the 1891 census Isabella Cumberford, a needlewoman, age 84 (b abt 1807) was a boarder living at 27 Bells Rows in Wishaw with Flora Campbell[6]. Isabella applied for poor relief on 14 Oct 1893 while living at 27 Bells Rows.

Isabella died 04 Oct 1894 at 24 Bells Rd in Wishaw. She had Apoplexy - 3 days. Her son Hugh was the death informant and he was living at 29 Queen Mary St in Glasgow.

Notes

1. When Isabella died in 1894, her son Hugh named her parents as James Brooks and Agnes Allan. However, Isabella named them as James Allan and Agnes Allan. So, possibility mother Agnes' maiden name was Brooks/Brock.
2. Sometimes Hugh and Isabella's children showed their mother's maiden name was Brock and sometimes they showed Allan. These sources show maiden name BROCK: 1830 marr, Dau Eliz 1st marr 1855, dau Agnes 1873 marr, son Allan 1880 marr, and son John 1888 death. These sources show maiden name ALLAN (which was mothers maiden name): Son James 1857 marr, son John marr, son Hugh 1863 marr and 1901 marr and 1915 death, 1864 son John marr, Dau Mgt 1876 death, Dau Agnes 1894 death, Dau Eliz 1898 death, son Thomas 1869 marr and 1920 death, son Robert marr, and son Allan 1933 death.
3. The 1891 census shows Isabella was born in Glasgow but since Isabella was living with another lady who was the head of the household, it could be this lady "thought" Isabella was born there since she lived in the vicinity most of her life.
