Biography

John Addison Allan (1850-?) was born in Lower Tranmere near Birkenhead, Cheshire in 1850. He was the son of William Allan & Jane Grace ^[1] and was christened on the 1st December 1850 at St Catherine, Tranmere. ^[2]

The family stayed in Tranmere for a short while longer, John's father was a shipwright so possibly worked in the shipyards there ^[3] but before long had crossed over the River Mersey to Liverpool and were living in Fairview Place, Toxteth Park in 1861 and John now had a couple of younger siblings. ^[4]

They stayed in Fairview Place for a decade or so ^[5] but moved down to London before 1881 and were then living in Kennington on Claylands Road. John had left school and was an electrician. ^[6]

The family remained in Kennington but in 1891, John was working away in Beckermet, Cumberland ^[7] before returning to London before 1901. His father had died a few years prior so John is living with his 2 sisters and their elderly mother. ^[8]

Around 1910 the family moved to Union Road, Clapham, where although John is the elector listed, his landlady is shown as Jane Allan of the same address (likely his mother rather than younger sister), ^[9] and stayed for a year before he moved and was boarding in Paradise Road, Clapham in 1911, still working as an electrician. ^[10] His mother & sisters had moved elsewhere in Clapham and was not living with them for whatever reason.

In February 1912 he was admitted to Lambeth Workhouse on Princes Road ^[11] and he was there for almost a year before being transferred to Wandsworth Workhouse in January 1913. (I can't find him after that) ^[12]
