Biography
William Allan was born in Scotland.
William was born on 17 September 1853 at Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland[1] and baptised at East Parish, Greenock. He was the second son of George Allan and Jessie Torrance named for his mother's father.
In 1861 he was living with his parents, George (an iron manufacturer aged 51) and Jessie (38), eight siblings - Jane T (13), George (11), Mary (10), Jessie (9), Margaret Muir (6), Elizabeth (3), James (2) and Isabella (10 months) - and three female domestic servants to look after them all at Ratho Street, Oakfield West, Greenock, Renfrewshire[2]. He was a scholar aged 7.
His father died in August 1865[3]. He moved with his mother Jessie C (48) and siblings - Jessie (19), Margaret M (16) and Isabel S (10) - to England where they were recorded in 1871 living at 11 Hale Road, Altrincham, Cheshire[4]. He was aged 17. There was a servant (28) born in Cheshire to look after them. His mother Jessie was a widowed property owner aged 48.
William died probably on 25 February 1872 at Bowdon, Cheshire[5], about a week before his mother, and his death was registered in the first quarter of 1872[6][7]. He was aged 18 and residing at Bowdon. He was buried on 28 February 1872 at Bowden, Cheshire[8]. His death was reported in an obituary on 1 March 1872 in the Manchester Evening News[9].
Research Notes
The transcript for the obituary gives the date of death as 25 March 1872, but this is an error as the obituary was on 1 March!!
