William Allan was born in Stewarton, Ayrshire, on November 14th, 1823. He was the son of James Allan, a mason, and Marion Bicket who were married at Stewarton, in December 1817. [1]
William was baptised in the parish of Stewarton, on November 30th, 1823.

In 1841, William, aged 15, was a wright's apprentice, living with his parents in the parish of Stewarton at Kirkford. [3]
In 1851, William, age 27, was working as a wright. He was living in the parish of Stewarton at Kirkford in the home of his father, James Allan, 61-year-old stone mason. Also in the household was his aunt, 62-year-old Janet Bicket, domestic dutier. [4]
William married, at about age 33, to Ann Welsh.
They were married in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire on May 16th, 1856. [5] Ann Welsh / Welch was the daughter of Thomas Welch and Jean nee Dickie. [6]

In 1861, William was 37 when the Scotland census was taken. He was a joiner and cabinetmaker, and was still residing in the parish of Stewarton at Kirkford, along with his wife, 36-year-old Ann Allan, and their two children: Jean Allan, age 4 and 2-year-old William Allan. [7]
In 1871, William, age 46, was working as a joiner and still living at Kirkford with his wife Ann Allan, age 44, and their three children: Jane Allan, age 14, William Allan, age 12, and 8-year-old Marion Allan. [8]
William's wife Ann passed away in 1878, aged 52. [9]
William's second marriage, at age 56, was to Jane Hannah.
They were married in Ayr, in 1880. [10]
In 1881, William Allan, age 57, was living in the parish of Kilwinning at Auchentiber, where he was working as a joiner. His wife, Jane, age 46, and son John Hannah, were also living in the home. [11]
In 1891, 65-year-old William Allan, joiner, was living in the civil parish of Newton on Ayr, at 29 Main street with his wife Jane 'Mrs Alan' and her 21-year-old son, John Hannah, a fireman. Also in the household were two lodgers: John Gilespie, 29-year-old pipemaker, and Daivd McCormick, 21-year-old baker. [12]
William Allan passed away in 1897, aged about 69.
He died at Newton on Ayr, in Ayrshire, Scotland.
