Biography

Matilda Allcock Ennis Phelps

Birth: Dec. 22, 1796 Death: Aug. 8, 1858

Matilda Allcock, daughter of Joseph Reynolds Allcock and Martha Ann Stilley Campbell. She was the second wife of George Ennis (George Ennis' first wife, Mary Frances Campbell, was her first cousin once removed) and and they had 2 sons Joseph Reynolds Ennis and William Tennant Ennis. George Ennis and Matilda married on April 21 1824. After his death in June 15, 1835, she married David D. Phelps in Oct. 10, 1836 and they had 3 children Columbus Marion Phelps, George Washington Phelps,and Martha Ann Phelps (who was named after her mother Martha Ann Stilly Campbell Allcock). She divorced David D. Phelps in 1851. David D. Phelps married Emily Jane Goodrum on Feb. 5, 1858 and Matilda died on Aug. 8, 1858. Matilda is buried in the Shields-Campbell Cemetery where 3 of her sons are buried; J. R. Ennis, W. T. Ennis, and George Washington Phelps whom she named after her first husband. David D. Phelps was buried in the Phelps Cemetery in Warren County--his second wife Emily Jane Goodrum Phelps married John T. Porter after the death of David D. Phelps and Emily Jane Goodrum Phelps Porter was buried next to her second husband.
