Biography

Thomas was born about 1500. Thomas Allen ... He passed away about 1583. [1] There does not appear to be a great deal of information on Thomas Allen, of Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England. The Wheeler Genealogy, by Raymond David Wheeler seems to be the main source for him.

Thomas Allen of Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England, is known from records for his daughter Isabel. [2]

His will can apparently be found here: Will of Thomas Allen, 13 Aug. 1557, Beds. Rec. Off. File, ABP/W 1557/254

Marriage

Thomas Allen is said (in at least one pedigree) to have married Mary ______ [3]

Children

Isabel Allen is said to have been born abt 1524 and married Henry Wheeler [4] in Bedfordshire, England, One unsourced pedigree gives the following information: [5]

Henry WHEELER b: 1503 d: 27 MAY 1556 married (1st) Alice SUGAR b: 1504 who then married (2nd) Isabel ALLEN b: ABT 1524 d: BET 28 NOV 1570 AND 21 FEB 1570/71. Had issue.

Questionable Children

John Allen and John Alyn AKA Allen, which appear to be duplicates, are indicated as the son of Thomas Allen of Bedfordshire, England. There is no evidence of any kind that supports this relationship. A death record is given for John Allen Alyn-3 however, it does not reveal a relationship to any other persons. The record indicates a burial date of 21 Sep 1570 at St. Botolph Aldgate, London, England. It is uncertain that this is a record for the same John Allen. [6] There is an unsourced Geni.com pedigree sheet that gives John Tege Alyn (b 1520) as a son of Thomas Allen (1500 - 1583) [7]

Hi Dee Ann, I can't see any sources to support Ralph Allen (Allan) as the father of this particular Thomas Allen. Apart from anything else, the source I have found suggests that Ralph died in 1452, which was well before this Thomas was born. Please get back to me if you would like to discuss, otherwise I'll detach him in a couple of days. Thanks, Gillian

This will is not available online at the Beds. record office, if somebody sees this and is local to that office they may be able to get a copy. The will might mention his wife's name.

I've attached the 1998 work of Raymond David Wheeler and Gordon Boyce Wheeler, they make no claim to Thomas Allen's wife or father so that should not be used as a source. I've also got all 4 volumes of R.D. Wheeler's work (Vol 3 posted to the Wheeler Name Project) and he makes no claims about Thomas Allen in those volumes. Only his joint work with G.B. Wheeler addresses the progenitor Henry Wheeler and Isabel/Thomas Allen.

Adding the 1998 work by R.D. and G.B. Wheeler that extended R.D.'s prior work by 2 generations and clarified a lot of the Wheeler of Cranfield mess. The work includes source information about the Allens.

Hi David and Dee, I was wondering if you have any sources for this profile. In particular, I note that the Find A Grave source for the daughter says that nothing else is known about the father. I am wondering if there are any sources to suggest or confirm that he is in fact the son of Ralph Allen. Also do you know anything about either of the sons currently connected - John Allen and John Alyn. They have the same birth and death details. Many thanks for your assistance. Gillian

Allen-18566 and Allen-10866 appear to represent the same person because: Same given name, Same LNAB, DOB estimated and only one year discrepancy, place of birth is the same. Some resarch will be needed to find sources to support other data but it appears these two profiles are the same person.
