Joseph Allen was born September 2, 1774, in Bedford county, Virginia, the son of James Allen and Mary (Kelsey) Allen. Joseph's father moved his family, first from Virginia to Lincoln County, Kentucky. About the year 1784, James bought a large tract of land near the present town of Bloomfield, Nelson county, Kentucky, and built a cabin. He returned to Lincoln county to bring his wife and children to the new cabin, but when he returned he found it in ashes. Indians had burned it and the neighboring fort near which it was built. James Allen built another home, which was eventually owned by a great-grandson, also named James Allen. [1]
On July 11, 1803, in Virginia, Joseph married Margaret Crawford, the daughter of Samuel Crawford and Jennet (Mason) Crawford, of Botetourt county, Virginia. Joseph was chosen county and circuit clerk of the newly created Brekinridge county, in Kentucky. He held the office for a period of fifty-eight years. Joseph served in the War of 1812 and was the father of the Honorable Alfred Allen, a distinguished lawyer and politician. Joseph died April 18, 1862, in Breckinridge county, Kentucky and is buried in the Hardinsburg Cemetery.[2]
