Disputed Wife

Mary Alden has been removed as wife. See discussion in Woodworth-Barnes, Esther Littleford, and Williams, Alicia Crane, Mayflower Families through Five Generations, Vol. 16 Part 1 of 3, John Alden. Boston, Massachusetts: General Society of Mayflower Descendants, 2002. p. 39.

Biography

"Samuel, ch. Samuel Sr., December 4, 1660" at Bridgewater, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[1]

His children with his first wife Rebecca Cary were:

  1. Samuel Allen, IV Born: 18 October 1686 at: Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts;[2] Died: Before 1 September 1736 at: Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts. Spouses: Jane Turner
  2. Ephraim Allen. Born: 11 April 1689 at: Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts. Married: Before 2 February 1712/13 Died: 12 March 1780 at: Attleborough, Bristol Co., Massachusetts. Spouses: Zipporah Crane
  3. Timothy Allen Born: 22 February 1690/91 at: Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts. Married: 11 October 1714 at: Norwich Connecticut ? Died: 23 May 1753 at: Mansfield Connecticut. Spouses: Rachel Bushnell
  4. Joseph Allen Born: 11 August 1693 at: Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts. Died: 14 August 1693 at: Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts.
  5. Mehetable Allen Born: 18 December 1694 at: Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., Massachuetts. Married: 17 January 1717/18 at: Marshfield Massachusetts. Spouses: Jonathan Alden
  6. Unknown Allen Born: 26 October 1697 at: Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts. Died: 26 October 1697 at: Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., MAassachusetts

After Rebecca's death, Samuel married his second wife, Mary Pratt, in Bridgewater. This second wife has sometimes been identified as Mary Alden, but that identification has been rejected. In New England Marriages Prior to 1700, Clarence Almon Torrey identified the second wife as "Mary [Alden?] Pratt? (?1667- ), daughter of Matthew."[3] The transcribed Records of Brunswick Separate Church of Scotland, Connecticut, where Samuel's son Joseph was active, provide additional evidence that her surname was Pratt in the form of an entry (which could be based on a family bible record) indicating that Samuel Allen married a woman named Pratt as his 2nd wife, and that "by her he had children Joseph, Matthew, and Seth." [4] Additionally, the same church records show that Samuel's grandson, Asahel Allen, named one of his sons "Pratt."[4] Samuel's second wife is likely to have been Mary Pratt, born in Weymouth, Massachusetts in 1667, the daughter of Matthew Pratt and Sarah (Hunt) Pratt of Weymouth. The will of Matthew Pratt, dated 30 June 1711, included a bequest to daughter "Mary Allin,"[5] indicating that his daughter Mary had married a man named Allen. This identification also is consistent with Torrey's indication that Allen's second wife Mary was the daughter of Matthew.

This profile has shown a death date of 28 June 1750. Vital records show that a Samuel Allen Jr., husband of Mary, died at Bridgewater on 28 June 1750.[6] The identity of this Samuel Allen is not certain; he has also been identified as this man's son of the same name. Considering, however, that the man who died on this date was identified as Samuel Allen Jr., it is very unlikely that he was a man in his 90th year, so it is very unlikely that it was this man.

Probate

His will is dated 1 September 1736 in Bridgewater and proved on 6 August 1750 in Plymouth. He mentions his wife, Jean Allen, and his grandchildren, Samuel Allen, and Abigail Waldow, his three daughters, Mehitabel Bushnell, Mary Kingman, and Rebecca Kingman, his six sons, Ephraim, Timothy, Joseph, Benjamin, Matthew, and Seth. Sons TImothy Allen and Seth Allen were named to be executors.[7]

His inventory was taken on 28 August 1750 in Bridgewater. Seth Alden gave oath to the inventory.[8]

On 23 October 1750, his real estate was divided between his sons, Matthew Allen, Joseph Allen, Deacon Seth Allen, Timothy Allen, the heirs of Benjamin Allen, and Ephraim Allen.[9]

In 1752, an account of the estate was recorded, including debts and charges of the estate, such as, for an attorney's advice on the challenge made by the grandchildren, and for travel to pay legacies.[10]

Notes

The following content appears to be relevant to a different Samuel Allen, namely Samuel Allen of Connecticut (born 1665 in Northampton, Massachusetts, and died 1718 in Coventry, Connecticut), the grandfather of Ethan Allen: The State of Vermont, Rolls of the Soldiers in the Revolutionary War, 1775 to 1783, Published by Authority of the Legislature, Compiled and Edited by John E. Goodrich, A Member of the Vermont Historical Society, Rutland, Vermont: The Tuttle Company, 1904, 236: A Pay Roll of Capt. Zebediah's Dewey's Company of Militia for service done the state in Oct. last, 1780.

831, 832: "The fact that the 'Green Mountain Boys' were at Quebec in 1776; that two of the officers on these rolls - Captain and Commissary Elijah Babcock, and Capt. Robert Cochran are identified in name and rank with those on a list handed to the Provincial Congress of New York by Ethan Allen and Seth Warner, on July 4, 1775, as officers of the Green Mountain Boys; and the further fact that none of the men are recorded in any other place, or with any other organization, all confirm the belief that the soldiers on its rolls herewith were a part of that historic band." Please add Jane Vining (Vining-420) as a spouse to this Samuel Allen. She is attached to his son Samuel Allen. See Samuel Allen's will on this profile for the source for her marrying him. Thanks!

Done! Thank you for adding the probate sources that clarify the question of which Samuel Allen was the one that Jane Vining married.

Once again, I am removing Mary Alden as a wife. He was not married to Mary Alden. Please read the text of this profile and also see Mary (Alden) Allen (1667-aft.1727), https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/391529/did-mary-alden-exist-i-don-t-think-so- , and Mary (Pratt) Allen (abt.1667-).

I am removing the text-section content that entered this profile when Allen-19526 was merged into this one. The birth and death information belong to two different men named Samuel Allen -- the birth data are the same as currently appear on Allen-6028 and the death info is the same as for Allen-1955. The source for the profile is an Ancestral File that I tried to access (in order to see what the profile was based on) but I could not do so because the File Number format is not consistent with the standard AFN format.

Allen-19526 and Allen-1385 are not ready to be merged because: We need to merge the fathers' profiles first.

This profile mixes up some life details of multiple men named Samuel Allen (something that often happens when we copy other people's Internet family trees).

The Samuel Allen who was born 4 December 1660 was Allen-1385. He did not live on Martha's Vineyard (Dukes County) and he did not marry Mary Alden.

The existing profile for the Samuel Allen who died in 1755 in Chilmark, Dukes County, is Allen-1955. He also did not marry Mary Alden.

People keep attaching Mary Alden to various men named Samuel Allen, but it's not clear if evidence exists for any of those marriages.

The Samuel Allen baptized in Manchester, Mass., in 1663, is a third Samuel Allen. He's represented by profile Allen-6028.

Please merge this profile into one of these other Samuel Allen profiles.
