Biography

James ALLEN was the son of Thomas ALLEN (1773-1848) and Ann SALT (1771-1853). He was born in 1802 in Cheadle, a market town in Staffordshire, England.[1] He was christened on 15 March 1803 in St Giles Parish Church, Cheadle, Staffordshire, England.[2] The parish register confirms he was the son of Thomas and Ann Allen.

He married Hannah CLEWLOW on 7 December 1824 in St. Giles Parish Church, Cheadle, Staffordshire, England.[3] They were married by the Reverend Delabere Pritchett. James and Hannah both made their marks in the marriage register with a cross. Anne Clewlow and Thomas Chawner were the witnesses.

James and Hannah had two children together: Elizabeth who was born in 1825 and died in infancy; and James who was born in 1827. James became a widower in 1828 when Hannah died.

He married his second wife Sarah BARKER on 6 December 1830 in St Giles Parish Church in Cheadle. They were married by the Reverend Delabere Pritchett. James made his mark with a cross in the marriage register whilst Sarah signed her own name. John Barker, Ellen Barker and.[4] Thomas Chawner were the witnesses.

James and Sarah had seven children together between 1831 and 1848. Their daughter Sarah died in infancy in 1836.

He appeared in the census in 1841 in Ciceley's Brook, Cheadle, Staffordshire, England.[5] In 1841 he was a labourer.[6]

Their daughter Mary died in infancy in 1836.

In 1851 he was continuing to work as a labourer.[7] He appeared in the census in 1851 in Well Street, Cheadle, Staffordshire, England.[8] In 1861 he was a labourer at a coal pit.[9] He appeared in the census in 1861 in Mill Lane, Cheadle, Staffordshire, England.[10]

He died on 1867 at Cheadle in Staffordshire.[11]He was buried at St. Giles the Abbot in Cheadle on 3rd March 1867.[12]

DNA

James is probably in the R1b>U152>L2 haplogroup based on the result of 1 YDNA test.[13] More direct paternal line testers are needed to cross reference this result.
