Biography

Nancy Jane Allen was born on 22 Apr 1824 in Quicksand, Breathitt, Kentucky, United States, daughter of SGT. William Shadrack Allen I (1783 - 1854) and Katherine Ann (Gearheart) Allen (1792 - 1860).

In the 1850 census Nancy (age 18) was in Breathitt, Kentucky with her parents. Her father was a farmer of modest means.^[1]

Within a few years, she married John Howard (~25) (born in Floyd in 1826; died in Quicksand on 12 Jul 1853), son of William Howard and Mary Salyer, on 22 Mar 1852.^[2]

The couple have four children together before John dies in 1859. Next she married Shadrich Oliver (~32) (born in Perry, Kentucky in 1828; died in Breathitt about ~1900), son of Joshua Oliver and Rachel Elizabeth Duff, in 1860 in Kentucky.

By 1880, the couple live in Bakerfork. In the 1880 census Nancy (age 50), Keeping House, was the wife of Shadrick Oliver. Her sons are old enough to assist with the farm. There are new sons in the family as well.^[3] Note: Appears the census taker was completely confused about the surname. He used Oliver's first name as the surname.

Oliver dies before the 1900 census. Nancy (age 66) is a widow living with her second oldest son John Oliver and his family in Springfork.^[4]

Nancy died on 19 Sep 1920 in Lee, Kentucky aged 96. Her burial location is not known.^[5]
