Biography

This profile is part of the Allen Name Study.

Mary Jane Allen was the daughter of Beverly Allen and Marina Goss Allen. She was born April 10, 1862 in Milltown, Chambers County, Alabama. [1]

Mary Jane Allen was less than one year old when her father, Beverly Allen died in December 1862 leaving her mother with eight children. These included Beverly's three oldest children who were the offspring from his first marriage to Mary Goss (Marina's sister).[2]

In the 1870 U.S. Census, (28 July 1870) the family lived in Milltown, Chambers County. Her mother Serina (Sterena) is listed as the head of the household with real estate valued at $2000 and a personal estate of $500. Mary Jane was listed as eight years old and attending school. Her half-siblings: Churchwell Allen (listed as age 28 but actually about 20) , Charles age 18 and Harley age 16 were listed as a farm hands. The younger children had attended school and included: Elizabeth age 14, Fleming age 12, Lucy age 10, and Veasey age 6. Veasey was born after the death of their father.[3]

In the 1880 U.S. Census (June 16, 1880) the family remained in Milltown. The older children had moved out and those who remained with Marina were: Elizabeth age 23, Fleming age 22, Mary Jane age 19 and Alice age 18. Jane's future husband George Abner Bishop was working as a farm hand on the farm of his brother, Benjamin Henry Bishop next door to the Allen family.[4]

Mary Jane and George were married January 27, 1881 in Chambers County. [5]

Their first daughter, Rena Elizabeth Bishop, was born January 1, 1882. She was no doubt named for Mary Jane's mother, Marina whose nickname was Rina, and George's mother, Elizabeth. She does not appear in any of the census data with her parents because the census of 1890 was destroyed. Rena married Edgar Jones Looser in January of 1900 and was out of the family of George and Mary Jane when it was enumerated on June 23, 1900.[6]

In the 1900 U.S. Census the family lived in Milltown, Chambers County. John Jefferson Bishop, George's brother's family, lived next door on one side and the family of Mary Jane's half-brother Churchwell Allen, lived on the other side. Other neighbors included Loosers and Sims families. George was a farmer who owned his own farm. George and Jane had been married 18 years and had 6 children, all alive in 1900. The children who were still at home included Loanie age 14, Eber age 9, Herbert age 3 and twins Eldred and Elbert age one year.[6]

In the 1910 Census they were still in Milltown and had a farm with a mortgage. Besides George and Jane, the family included Herbert age 14, and Twins, Elbert and Eldred age eleven. Herbert, Elbert and Eldred attended school. Eber age 19 and his wife, Icie Mae, also lived there. Eber was listed as farming on the home farm, working on his own account. Lonie age twenty-four had married William Thomas Barker in 1909.[7]

In the 1920 Census (3 January 1920) the family was on a farm on Fant Ferry and Wadley Roads in Milltown. This may have been the same farm that they always lived on and this is the first time it was identified. George's family included Jane and Elbert (age 20). Herbert and his wife are listed in the next family. He had married Izora Willoughby in 1917. Herbert and Elbert were probably working the family farm. Eldred had married Lou Etna Bishop in 1917. [8]

In the 1930 Census (10 April 1930) family's residence was listed as Bibby Ferry and Wadley Roads. This may have been the same farm as before. George was seventy-one and Jane was sixty-six years old. George was still listed as farming on his own account, but the next family was that of Eldred (Eldredge) who was also farming. I suspect that they worked together on the family farm. Eldred was a widower with two young sons: John W. age eleven and Willard age nine. Lou Etna had died in 1927. Elbert had moved to Texas and married Nancy Farris in 1924.[9]

Mary Jane died after a brief illness on December 14, 1938. Her obituary appeared in the Lafayette Sun newspaper on December 21, 1938. Mrs. Jane Bishop Dies After a Brief Illness. Mrs. Mary Jane Allen Bishop, age 76 years, wife of G. A. Bishop, of the Mountain Springs community, died at her home in that section of the county last Wednesday following an illness of approximately five days. The deceased was a pioneer Chambers Countian, being a member of the Mount Olive Primitive Baptist Church and identified with its interests for many years. She had made her home in the Mountain Springs community for many years and was identified with its several interests during her active life. Funeral services were held from the Mountain Springs Baptist Church on Thursday morning at 11 o'clock with Rev. (Elder) Luther Parrish and Rev. G. D. Hunt officiating. Interment was in the Mountain Springs Cemetery, with J. E. Cutler, LaFayette funeral director, in charge of funeral plans. Surviving are a husband, G. A. Bishop; five children: Mrs. Renie Looser and E. B. Bishop, Lanett, H. B. Bishop and Eldred Bishop, Mountain Springs, and Elbert Bishop, Killeen, Texas; and several grandchildren. Grandsons were the pallbearers.[10][11]

Mary Jane was buried on December 15, 1938 at Mountain Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Chambers County, Alabama, United States.[11]

Research Notes

Other Children

George and Mary Ann were the parents of six children who survived to be adults. They were born in 1882, 1886, 1892, 1896, 1899 (twins). There is a record of a child born on June 16, 1890 in Tallapoosa County.[12] I have found no information about what happened to that child nor, if there were other children who did not survive to be adults. There are gaps between the surviving children that would have been long enough to have had a child born within them.(Cushing-1054 20:45, 18 August 2021 (UTC))
