Biography

Evidence indicates that William Allen was the son of Zachariah and Elizabeth Allen, who moved from South Farnham Parish, Essex County, Virginia to St. Thomas Parish, Orange County, Virginia in about 1750. The family lived in the tithe district described as "south side North Fork North Anna up Mountain Road to county line."

Just before 1770 the Allen family moved to Botetourt County, Virginia and settled in the area of present-day Roanoke, where John McAdoo also lived, the soon-to-be father-in-law of William Allen. William appeared on a tithe list of 1775 of those who lived "on the South Side of Roanoke River." In 1797 William and Martha bought 284 acres on the Smoking Spring branch of Beaver Creek in what is now Barren County, Kentucky.

According to family tradition, William Allen was a powder maker. Salt peter was mined from caves in Barren County and during the War of 1812 was made into gunpowder.

William did not leave a will or estate. His son James Allen died unmarried and without a will; his brothers and sisters were listed as his heirs in Barren County Equity File No. 886, filed September 20, 1838.

James and his siblings, the children of William and Martha, were:

  • Elizabeth Allen, born circa 1772, probably in Botetourt, Virginia, died between 1803 and 1805 in Barren County, Kentucky. She married John Gray (1772-1838) on 11-2-1792 in Mercer County, Kentucky. They had 6 children. John remarried after Elizabeth's death, Mary T. Logan, and had 6 children by that union as well.
  • James Allen, born circa 1774, probably in Virginia, died circa September 1838. He never married or had children.
  • Rachel Allen, born 2-26-1780, "at Boone's Fort, Virginia" according to a family record. This could be Boonesborough, Kentucky. She died 10-16-1859 in Oregon. She married Robert Bird, 1776-1855, in Oregon. They had 11 children.
  • John Allen, born circa 1785, died in about 1817 in Barren County, Kentucky. He married Ann Perkins on 7-7-1800 in Barren County, Kentucky. He was a soldier in the War of 1812, a farmer, miller and hotel-keeper. An inventory of his estate was recorded March 14, 1817 in Barren County (Will Book 1, page 424). They had 3 children.
  • Mary Allen, born circa 1788, died in 1846. She married Jesse Perkins on 7-15-1807 in Barren County, Kentucky. They had 10 children.
  • Martha Allen, born in about 1790. She married Ruel Custer on 10-31-1816 in Barren County, Kentucky. He served in the War of 1812.
  • Catherine Allen, born in about 1794. She married Charles H. Kimble in 1822 in Barren County, Kentucky. They had children, unknown number.
  • Elijah Allen, born in about 1798, died in 1849 in Barren County, Kentucky. He married Dicey Cardin in 1825 in Barren County. He served in the War of 1812 and fought at the Battle of the River Raisin. They had 4 children.
