John Carter; b. about 1722; son of John Carter and Hannah Bickford; m. Johanna Allen 28 Oct 1747; d. circa 1800 at (probably), Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine.
The earliest record of John Carter is his marriage Oct., 18, 1747 by Rev. John Newmarch at Kittery, to Joanna (Allen). (Kittery V.R.) He is next found to be living on Sebascodigan (Great Island), Harpswell, Me. prior to 1755. (History of Brunswick, Topsham and Harpswell - p. 872)
Three children are shown bapt. at Harpswell in 1754 and 1755. (Record Book of Rev. Elisha Eaton of Harpswell) The family next appears in Georgetown when John purchased land there Aug. 10, 1764, from Timothy Blake who was a pioneer settler of Cape Rosier, now a part of Brooksville, Me. The land was transferred back to Blake the same day. (Lincoln Co. Deed - Wiscasset) Three children were baptized in Georgetown in 1765 and 1766 in that part of town which was established as Phippsburg in 1814. There are no further deeds on record in Lincoln County in which John Carter is mentioned.
A list of settler's lots in Sedgwick dated June 3, 1780 shows John as owner of lot #1-78. The Settler's List of Nov. 16, 1785 shows he settled in Sedgwick in 1773 at which time there were 3 in his family. The family also shows in the Sedgwick census of 1790 with 2-0-1. It appears from the Settler's List that John Carter, Jr. arrived in 1770 and was followed by other family members in 1773. In 1794, John Carter sold land to his son and daughter-in-law, Isaac and Sylva Carter; and in 1797 to Bartholomew Flowers and David Harden at which time his wife Joanna is mentioned by name. Both John and Joanna probably died soon after this date for no further records of them are to be found. They left no wills and there are no probate records for them.
