Biography

Walter Allen of Berwick was born about 1643. His parents are unknown.[1][2]

Walter married Mary Holmes by 1694.[3]

He was deposed in 1720, aged seventy-seven years, that he came to New England "the year that King Charles II was restored the crown of England."[1] Walter was testifying about the mills in Berwick and stated that Roger Plaisted was then in possession of the mill. Hannah Hobbs testified at the same time that after Roger died his sons managed the mill and then Thomas Doubty and after him William Spencer and Walter Allen.[4] Walter testified as to the truth of the deposition of Henry Wright concerning the Plaisted land in 1715. [5]

“The Deposition of Hannah Hobbs aged Seventy Nine Years testifiety & saith that upwards of Sixty Years agon Mr Roger Plaisted was in Possession of a certain Saw Mill on Asacubedoc Falls otherwise called the Great Works in Berwick by Improving sd Mill in Sawing & in Planting & Improving a considerable Quantity of Land adjoining & that the sd Plaisted was put into the Possession of the Premises by Mr Eliakim Hutchinson of Boston & after the Decease of the sd Plaisted the Premises… remained in the Possession of several of the sd Plaisteds Sons & One Thomas Doubty till William Spencer Decd & Walter Allen was in the Improvement of the Mill… who improved the same for some Time… from & under the aforesd Hutchinson (till about Twenty Years ‘gon) John Plaisted & John Hill Esqrs purchased the same of the aforesd Huchinson as I have been informed & Elisha Plaisted Esqr & Mrs Mary Hill till this Day…”

“Walter Allen aged about Seventy Seven Years also appearing made Oath to the Truth of the above affidavit of Hannah Hobbs excepting Sixty Years agon Mr. Roger Plaisted being in Possession which He can not so perfectly remember, but deposeth that year King Charles the Second was restored to the Crown of England, He this Deponent came into the Country & at that Time Mr. Roger Plaisted was in Possession of the Premisses… & possession of the same remained in the several Persons above named to this Day…

Walter Allin… further testifieth that the Bounds of the land formerly reputed to be Mr Eliakim Hutchinsons at the Great Works in Berwick as was in the Possession of Mr. Roger Plaisted when this Deponent came into the Country extended from Thomas Spencer Decd his Bounds, to Faggoty Bridge & from thence down the Brook to ye Great Works River & so continuing by sd River to the aforsd Thomas Spencers Bounds which… Land is on the Southerly Side of sd River the remaining Part being on the Northerly side of sd River, bounded by Humphrey Chadbourne… at the White Hill… to John Lambs Landing Place to a certain Cole Pitt by the… River & from thence down the River to… Chadbourns Bounds & that the sd Roger Plaisted improved several Pieces of Meadow in Berwick To wit a certain Meadow known by the Name of Totnack Meadow Whites Marsh & at Humphreys Pond all which Premisses… was accounted to be the aforesd Hutchinsons & has been improved by the Persons within named to this Day this Deponent not knowing any other Person ever improving the same or any Part thereof…”[6]

If our Walter Allen arrived in 1660, I can’t make a case for him being related to the Walter Allen who came with Winthrop’s Fleet twenty years prior. This Walter Allen settled in Newbury and then lived in Charlestown and died there in 1681. There was a Thomas Allen who was a shipbuilder in Kittery who purchased property from our Walter (see below) who was probably connected with the Newbury family. I wonder if Walter of Newberry may have been an uncle to our Walter, but, an on-line search reveals numerous Walter Allens in England at the time so he may not be related at all.

Walter had land grants in 1671, 1680 and1699 in Kittery (Berwick was part of Kittery until 1714). [7]

Elisha Cooke was a wealthy physician and politician in Boston. At his death in 1737 his estate was valued at £ 63,000 (that would be $15-20 million or more today). These poor folks in South Berwick didn’t stand a chance against somebody with that sort of power and money… they were probably lucky to be able to keep half the land!

Walter now signed his name with a mark. Was this an indication that he was now physically infirm and unable to write? One has to wonder if he may have suffered a stroke or some such affliction the age of 82.

“I Walter Allen of Berwick… Husbandman for and in ye Consideration of the love I bear unto my well beloved Wife Mary I do… give… a certain piece of Upland situate… in said Berwick containing Nine Acres & Half Acre Bounding… on the Road leading from Kittery by Stones to Humphreys Pond… on Land of Capt Nathaniel Gerrish… on Salmon Falls Brook… on the Land which I gave and sold to my Son Samuel Allen (Ten Acres) which is the half of the Homestead Twenty Acres And with the said Nine Acres and Half Acre of Land I give the Houses Fencing and two Cows to her… Excepting four Acres & an half Acre out of the sd nine Acres and an half at that End next to Salmon Fall Brook shall be after my sd Wife Mary’s Decease to my Son Joseph Allen… and hereby utterly Exclude all my Children Grand Children forever of any part of Interest In the above mentioned premises… the Twenty first of May… Seventeen hundred and Twenty five…

Interesting. Walter felt strongly about deeding his home to his wife and not passing on the property by way of a will. Perhaps he wanted to avoid the potentially long and expensive probate process. He also goes out of his way to exclude his children from meddling in this. Mary was a second wife, not the mother of his children and one has to wonder if there was some difficulty between her and her step-children.
