Biography

Charles was born in 1855 in Greenfield, Massachusetts, the son of William and Elizabeth Allen.

In 1865, the Allen family lived in Greenfield, Massachusetts. The household included William H. Allen, 45, born in Massachusetts, a merchant; his wife Elizabeth J., 35; their five children, all born in Massachusetts: Mary E., 12; Charles, 10; Cornelia, 8; Franklin, 6; and William H., 4; and Margaret McCarty, 20, born in Ireland, a housemaid. Living nearby was William’s brother (and business partner), Franklin B. Allen, 43, and his wife Josephine F., 30. Both were born in Massachusetts. [1]

In 1870, the Allen family lived in Greenfield, Massachusetts. The household included William H. Allen, 50, born in Massachusetts, occupation: Savings Bank, with $7500 in real estate and $15,000 in personal estate; his wife, Elizabeth J., 42, b. NY; their five children, all b. MA: Charles, 15; Cornelia, 13; Franklin, 9; William H. J., 8; and Elizabeth, 3. All the children were in school except for the youngest one. Also living with them was their housemaid, Margaret McCarty, 25, b. Ireland. [2]

In 1880, the Allen family lived in Greenfield, Franklin, Massachusetts. The family included William Henry Allen, 61, born in Massachusetts, treasurer of the Savings Bank; his wife, Elizabeth J.C., 50, born in New York, who was suffering an ulcerated arm that day; their children, all born in Massachusetts, Charles, 25, a bank clerk; Cornelia, 23; Franklin, 20, a bank clerk; William H., 19, a college student; Elizabeth C., 13, in school; and Marion, 9, in school. Living nearby was William’s brother, Franklin R. Allen, 58, a merchant, his wife Josephine, four children, and two servants. [3]

Charles Allen was the treasurer of Franklin Savings Institution, as was his father before him. He is buried with his parents and other family in the Green River Cemetery, Greenfield, Mass. [4]
