Biography

Matthew Allen, son of Samuel (Jr.) and Mary Allen, was born in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, on 10 June 1708.[1]

He married Sarah Brett, daughter of Seth Brett and Sarah Alden, on 11 November 1735 in Bridgewater.[2]

There were two couples named Matthew and Sarah Allen in Bridgewater in this timeframe. One distinguishing feature of the two seems to be that only the proband's family was baptizing children in East Parish, where he was styled Matthew Jr.

Children (births recorded Bridgewater, baptisms East Parish of Bridgewater):[3][4]

  • Nehemiah Allen, b. 22 September 1736, bp. 26 September, d. an infant
  • Ezra Allen, b. 25 September 1739, bp. 30 September
  • Nehemiah Allen, bp. 16 August 1741, d. before father's will
  • Mary Allen, b. 16 June 1745, bp. 5 August, d. before father's will
  • Sarah Allen, b. 23 December 1747, bp. 27 December

Matthew died 21 July 1787.[5]

His will, dated 25 August 1778, in which he styled himself Matthew Allen of Bridgewater, Gentm., witnessed by Betty Allen, Molley Stetson, Nathan Alden, Junr, names:

  • beloved wife
  • son Ezra (sole executor)
  • son Simeon
  • daughter Sarah

It was proved 3 September 1787, and inventory was ordered of Messrs. Elisha Mitchel, Gent., John Withman Junr, Gent., Nathan Alden Junr. Gent., all of Bridgewater, and returned 17 September 1787 in amount of £486.8.5. Administration granted to Ezra Allen, yeoman, under his own bond and that of Nathan Alden, Junr, Gent. and Simeon Allen yeoman, all of Bridgewater. Sarah Allen affirmed that she and her sons agreed on her dower and discharged them from any obligations on 30 August 1787, witnessed by Simeon Brett.[6]

In 1788, his real estate was divided between his two sons, Ezra, and Simeon.[7]

The probate record should dispel any notion that Matthew, the proband, married, late in life, Jane Keen.

According to "Epitaphs in old Bridgewater, Massachusetts" by Williams Latham, this Mathew, son of Samuel, was called Jr because he was younger than his cousin Matthew. He and his father Samuel were important donors of land for the in East Bridgewater. Much family info at this source, page 184 and 201 where his epitaph identifies him as the grandson of the old town clerk, Samuel Allen:

Allen-28920 and Allen-3887 appear to represent the same person because: These the same person, though the birthdate of Allen-28920 is off (see sources in Allen-3887). I have put a note in one of the wive's profiles about the child -- records reflect she was of the "other" Matthew/Sarah Allen couple in Bridgewater at this time.

Matthew, son of Samuel and Mary Pratt *was* called Matthew Jr. in East Bridgewater parish records, despite his father not being Matthew.
