Biography

Mary was born about 1565. She is the daughter of Christopher Allen and Audrey Paget.



Mary's Uncle,Charles Paget was like Mary a Catholic and known for his implication in the Babington Plot. Before his death, he settled on Mary his estates including the Manors of Aston and Weston on Trent in Derbyshire. These were to descend to her daughter Mary (Roper) after her mother's death . [1]



Death and Will

Mary probably died on 30th December 1630, [2] her will was written at the end of October and gained probate on the 5th January 1634/5 [3]


In the name of God Amen the two and twentith daye of October Anno Dm 1634 and in the tenth yeare of the raigne of our Soverigne Lord Charle by the grace of God of England Scotland France and Ireland King defender of the fayth etc
I Mary Gerard widdowe late wyfe of Will’m Gerard late of Trent in the County of Som’set Esq. deceased benig at this present in good and p’fect memory (thanks be given to Almighty God for the same) and being desirous to settle and dispose of that worldly goods and possessions whereof God hath made mee owner and partaker w’th I desire to settle and leave in a good and peaceable manner to avoid all controv’sies w’ch might otherwise arise after my death concerning the same ass' also from henceforth having according to my desire disposed of my worldly goods and possessions I maye the better apply my self? to heavenly meditat’ons and especially to free my self in my last sickness from all worldly care that then I may be [co__lly or?] attentive to the good of my soule doe therefore make this my last will and testam’t in manner and forme following.
First I comend and bequeath my soule to the merciful hands of my deare Redeemer hopeing by and through the merritt of his bitter passion to be made a partaker of his heavenly kingdom My body I comt to the earth to be buryed at the discretion of my executors hereafter named .
I give to my Daughter the Lady Hansby my jewell of gould set with fower smalle dyamonds and fower smalle rubies. Also I give her my cubbord? with drawers
I give to my sister Allen xls (£10?) my silver caudle cupp; and all my pewter, brasse and lynnen and yron Also sills and the bedd and furniture to it in the trunke bed in my chamber And I give to her my black damask gowne ,
I give to my sone Gerards daughters that shalbe living at the tyme of my death Cls (£100??) wh'ch Sir Richard and Sir Walter Tichborne oweth mee to be equally devided amongst them
I give more to my Grandchilde Elizabeth Gerard my border of gould conteyning eighteen peeces
I give to my Grandchild Mary Hansby my lesser border of gould conteyning seaven and twenty peeces and my silver tankard.I give to my Grandchilde Anne Hansby one single silver porrenger dish And to my Grandchild Francis Hansby one other single porrenger dish, I give to my Grandchild Rayphe Hansby my silver Bolle. I give to my Grandchilde Roy ' my watch. I give to my cosens Edmond Colles and Robert Allen xxs a peece I give to my cosen Thomas Comborford the bedd boulster pillows quilt covering, blanketts and all the furniture belonging to it wherein I lye. I give to Mr William Daye my fower silver spoones. I give to Miss Elizabeth Goodman my [___} chamb__ pettycote And I give more to my said Grandchild Elizabeth Gerard my black satten gowne. I give to Andrew James my servant fyve poundes and to Elizabeth James his sister fyve markes yf they serve mee till my death. I give to Mrs _laston? forty shillings yf she likewise be long contyme my servant I give to my cosen John Comberford fyve pounds, I give to my loveing friend Harry? Barket? A ring with a death head of fortie shillings price
All the rest of my goods chattles and money w’ch shalbe remayniing after all my debts and legacies are payed and my funerall expences discharged I give to my foresaid cosen Thomas Cumberford and I make ordayne and appoint my said cosen Thomas Cumberford and Henry Barket executors of this my last will and testament revoaking hereby all other wills by me formerly made.In witness that this is my last will and testament the same being two sheetes of paper written I have to either sheets put my name and to this last shete have set my seale the day and yeare first above written

Mary Gerard Sealed, subscribed and published as the last will and testament of the said Mary Gerrard in the presence of the of (the name of Henry above written being interlyned in two places and the legacy set downe ___________ being cancelled before the sealing and publishing hereof William Cape Elizabeth Allen John Comborford John Loveson Andrew James

Thomas Lord Arundell of Wardour, Henry Spiller of Latham, Middlesex, esquire and Thomas Banckroft of London gentleman, by which for the love and affection Charles Pagett bears towards Mary Gerard widow his niece, one of the daughters of Sir Christopher Allen and Dame Etheldred his wife deceased, sister of Charles, and towards Mary daughter of Mary and towards the heirs of Mary Colles deceased, another of Charles' nieces, for their advancement and the continuance of the premises in Charles Paget's blood and kindred, Charles covenanted with 2. that he would before Pentecost convey to 2. the manors of Weston Aston, Wilne, Shardlow, Morley and Smalley, Morley Park, the advowsons of Weston, Aston and Morley, and all lands etc in the fields, parishes and hamlets of the places named above and in Kiddesley, and 2. were to be seised of the premises to the use of Charles Pagett for his life without impeachment of waste, then to the use of Mary Gerard the elder until Mary the younger should pay to Mary the elder £600 and, from the expiration of Mary the elder's estate, to the use of Mary the younger and the lawful heirs of her body, with successive remainders to the heirs of Mary Colles's body and to the use of Mary Gerard the elder, her heirs and assigns for ever. With proviso that Charles Pagett may revoke these uses and that 2. will then hold to such uses as Charles may appoint.

I have added a transcription of her will and her inheritance. I would like to add a few more details to her biography (much as on her husband's, children, recusancy ) I've also got further notes on her father Christopher and his wife I had been researching these and had intended to create profiles of them but had gone forwards rather than sideways
