Biography

Company B Roster
Sgt. James Allen served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: 10 Mar 1862
Side: CSA
Regiment(s): 38th Virginia Infantry

James William Allen was born in Callands, Pittsylvania, Virginia on January 24, 1838. He would be shown with parents Hartwell and Rebecca Allen in the 1850 and 1860 census records for Pittsylvania. The family in 1850:

Hartwell Allen M 39 Virginia Rebecca Allen F 36 Virginia

  1. William Allen M 12 Virginia (James William Allen)
  2. Arabel Allen F 10 Virginia
  3. Otey Allen M 7 Virginia

In 1860, the Allen family was living in Museville, Pittsylvania, near the center of recruiting for Company B of the 38th Virginia Infantry. James' brother Otey F. Allen enlisted in Company B, but died of disease in Richmond on March 4th of 1862. James enlisted in the CSA just a week later; March 10, 1862, joining Company B of the 38th Virginia Infantry as brother Otey had.

James was wounded either at the Battle of Chester Station May 10, 1864, or Drewry's Bluff on May 16, 1864, as he was hospitalized in Richmond shortly thereafter. James was taken POW at the Battle of Five Forks on April 1, 1865, and sent to Hart's Island in New York.

Also in Company B of the 38th were Henry C. Fuller and Waddy T. Fuller. The Fullers lived nearby the Allen family in 1860. Their sister Louise was the future bride of James W. Allen.

James married Louise E. Fuller on September 20, 1866 in Pittsylvania, and the 1870 - 1900 censuses combine to show the couple had at least these children:

  1. William O. 1868
  2. Alonzo 1870
  3. Ashley C. 1874
  4. Latisha 1875(Elva?)
  5. Charley E. 1878
  6. Rebecka Euna 1880
  7. Mary E. 1882

In the 1870 record for Dan River, Pittsylvania, James is shown living next door to parents Hartwell and Rebecca Allen.

The 1900 census of Callands would note marriage to Louise E. Allen in 1867, and show four of the children still in the home:

James W Allen Head M 62 Va Louise E Allen Wife F 56 Va

Elva Allen, Charles C Allen, Euna R Allen, Mary E Allen

James and Louise were living in Callands in 1910, with daughters Euna R. and Mary E. still in the home. James passed away in Callands on January 20, 1913.
