We find from Private Allen's Company Muster-in Roll dated March 28, 1862, Co D, 19 Texas Cavalry (Buford's Regiment) that he was 33 years old at the time of enlistment. He mustered in on March 28, 1862 at Hillsburg, Texas, Dallas County, as a Private by Capt John B Williams, for the Period of the War. His description: height 5 feet 8 1/2 inches Eyes: Blue Hair: Brown. The number of miles to rendezvous 70, and the valuation of his horse $110 and his equipment was valued at $15.

On the 19 Cavalry Texas Confederate Bounty and Receipt Roll, of the organization named above, John F Allen, signed for Bounty, $50. Roll dated Camp Stonewall Jackson Headquarters, 19th Regiment Texas Cavalry, Dallas County, June 24, 1862. JW Wilkinson signed the Bounty Pay and Receipt Roll.

The Nineteeth Texas Cavalry mustered into the Confederate Army on March 31, 1862, when fear of the draft encouraged many men to join the Cavalry before being inducted into the Infantry. Buford took the regiment to Arkansas in the autumn of 1862. It is unclear how Burford joined the Brigade, especially since authorities had recommended the troops be transferred to the infantry. John F saw no major action until Major Nathaniel Bank's invasion of Louisiana in 1864, they did not arrive in time to take part in the fighting at Mansfield and Pleasant Hill but did participate in following the Union Army on its retreat down the Red River, fighting numerous skirmishes with Union Cavalary and Infantry.

John F last saw action at the battle of Yellow Bayou on May 18, 1864, and the regiment disbanded May 23, 1865. Throughtout its three years of service, the Nineteeth provided valuable service as scouts and raiders and took part in the defense of Texas in the Red River Campaign of 1864.

As we look back at the Census', On the 1830 Federal Census, we find John F, being a few months old, living with his parents John age 26, Nancy age 24, and brother Jesse born in 1826 age 4, and sister Nancy Ann age 2 born in 1828, Lowndes County, Alabama. They are listed as free white persons, does not look like any slaves or free colored were listed living in the household. We find John F Allen, on the 1850 Anderson County Census, living with his father, John and his wife, Margaret Hatton Allen. We have not found where John F's mother, Nancy, was buried. In the household were 8 other children, Margaret and John's childrens from their previous marriages along with their year old son, Francis. Note we find living next door to them Henry and Margaret Fulgham and their 14 year old daughter, Mary Ann Eleanor Fulgham.

On October 28, 1852 in Houston County, Texas, John F Allen married Mary Ann Eleanor Fulgham. They were the parents of M. Jane, Nancy Elizabeth, M. Frances, John Abraham, Alice Victoria, Emma, Henry, George Washington, Charles and Lemuel.

From Rootsweb.com, we find John F and Mary Ann Allen listed with one child, Nancy Elizabeth living in Houston County in 1852. On the 1860 Anderson County Census John and Mary Ann have four children living in the household, Mary Jane age 7, Elizabeth age 5, MT age 3 and John Abraham age 2.

The 1880 Census finds the family back in Houston County, Mary Ann is 44 years old, the head of the household, John F having died before the Census was taken. She had seven of her children living with her, the youngest Linnie was one year old. She and the children are living next door to her oldest daughter, Nancy Elizabeth who had married George Austin Grounds in 1875.

John F's father, John Allen's grave is marked by a Citizens of the Republic of Texas 1836-1846 Marker, meaning that John F Allen was 6 years old or younger when he first came to Texas. To have the honor of this Marker, it had to be documented that John Allen was in Texas during this time before the Marker was issued to the family.
