James Lane Allen was born in 1849 near Lexington, Kentucky to Richard and Helen (Foster) Allen. Growing up in the area near Lexington he was known as "Laney". He was considered to be "Kentucky's first important novelist". He passed away in 1925.

James was the youngest of seven children.
He had a "reclusive sister" named Anne.
Before writing full time, James spent 12 years teaching "in Missouri, West Virginia, and Kentucky."
