Biography

He was born on 22 Apr 1704 in St.Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia and his parents were Elizabeth (Walker) and Robert Samuel Allen, Sr. No document has been found that recorded the middle name Samuel.

The Vestry book of St.Paul's Parish recorded a Robert Allen in the parish as early as 1719.

Robert Allen, Jr. first married about 1720 in New Kent County, Virginia to Elizabeth Stokes Young (1702-1762). Her maiden surname is unproven but there is strong indication that his wife, Elizabeth was a Young. In 1704 John Young and his family lived in St.Peter's Parish and then Lemuel Young lived near the Allen's in Lundenburg County, Virginia. Not only does the name of Young descend down in the Allen family, the great-grandson of Robert Allen and grandson of Drury Allen were named Young Lemuel Allen (named for Lemuel Young). [1]

In 1720 St.Peter's Parish, New Kent County went into the formation of St.Paul's Parish, Hanover County, Virginia.

- Robert Allen of St.Peter's Parish had children born there as late as 1734.
- Robert Allen was in St.Paul's Vestry book in Hanover County, Virginia until 1743.

On 09 July 1724 his father, "Robert Allin", was granted 400 acres on the north side Chicohominy Swamp adjoining Capt. Thompson.

On the 24th day of September "Robert Allen of St.Paul's Parish in Hanover County, Gent. for the love and affection that I bare unto my son Robert Allen of this parish and county have given, granted and confirmed unto the said Robert Allen, my son, 125 acres of land ... being part of patent bearing date lying and being in the parish and county aforesaid on the north side Chickahominy swamp" ...

Signed: Robt. Allin
Witnesses: Benjamin Hawkins, Henry Borrin, H??? Burerley
Proved: 02 Oct 1735. [2]

Lunenburg County, Virginia was formed in 1745.

Robert Allen and his brother, Drury Allen, appeared in the newly formed County of Lunenburg in Virginia.

Robert Allen was appointed one of the Readers for Cumberland Parish, Lunenburg County, Virginia from 1746 to 1749. [3]

On 10 July 1755 Robert Allen was granted 50 acres of land on both sides of Buffalo Creek in Lunenburg County, Virginia. [4] At that time Buffalo Creek was on the border of Lunenburg County, Virginia and flowed into Granville County, North Carolina. It appears to be a different Robert Allen who was granted land in 1757 in Amelia County, Virginia. [1]

At a Vestry held 04 November 1755, it was "ordered that Daniel Claiborn, Silvanes Walker & Robert Allen do on the third Monday in February meet at the Mouth of Ledbetters Creek & do procession all the land between North Meherrin River, Winninhams Road and the Road from Winninhams Bridge to Stokes's Race Grounds & make return thereof according to law". [5]

About 1757 Robert and his wife moved to Granville County, North Carolina.

It appears from various deeds that Robert Allen was indeed in control of his family, including that of his son-in-laws, the Hudson brothers. When Robert Allen moved from Virginia to North Carolina, William and John Hudson moved along with Robert and his family. In return for their loyalty and affection; Robert gave each land in Granville/Bute Counties, North Carolina, USA. It appears this bond between the Hudson Brothers and Robert Allen was much more than an in-law relationship. [1] William Hudson gave land in Granville, North Carolina to 3 daughters and sons-in-law including Ursula Hudson and James Pool.

.1 Robert Samuel Allen, Sr. (1675-1756) m: Elizabeth Walker
..2 Robert Samuel Allen, Jr. (1704-1784) m: Elizabeth Stokes Young
...3 Elizabeth Doris Allen m: 1748 John Hudson
...3 Susanna Allen m: 1747 William Hudson
...3 Josiah Allen, Sr. (1733-1781)
....4 James West Allen (1770-1826) m2: Rebecca Hudson (granddaughter of William Hudson & Susanna Allen above).

On 10 November 1757 Robert Allen was granted 600 acres of land on both sides of Billy Creek; and his brother, Drury Allen, was granted land in 1761 also in Granville County, North Carolina. [6]

His wife, Elizabeth. relinquished her dower rights in two deeds recorded in February 1762 in Granville County, North Carolina ...

- On 16 February 1762, Robert Allin of Granville County in Province of North Carolina, sold to John Hudson, in consideration of 30 pounds, 300 acres lying in the county of Granville on both sides of Billes Creek and Elizabeth Allin relinquished her right of dower at a court held on the 8th of May 1762. [7]
- The other deed was from Robert Allen, Sr. and his wife Elizabeth Allen, to Robert Allen, Jr. for love and affection, 225 acres on the West side of Billy's Creek. [This deed has not been found, Robert Allen, Jr. did purchase land as shown previously.]

Elizabeth died shortly after signing the above two deeds.

On 01 February 1763, Robert Allin, miner of Granville County, sold to Robert Allin, Juner, of the same place, 100 acres of land on the head of Buffeloe Creek, lying in Granville County, North Carolina, noted as bounded on land of Robert Allen and John Hudson's corner, and witnessed by John Hudson and Henry Yarbrough. [8]

On 08 February 1763, John Hardin and Sarah his wife, of Granville County, North Carolina sold unto Robert Allin, Juner of Granville, 100 acres of land lying on the west side of Billeys Creek. [8]

In 1764 part of Granville County went into Bute County, North Carolina.

By 1765 Robert Allen, Jr. had married secondly to Hannah Edwards (daughter of John Edwards) when her father's last Will named his two daughters, Hannah and Elizabeth as being married to Allens. [citation needed]

According to one descendent, when Robert Allen moved from Virginia to North Carolina, William and John Hudson moved along with Robert and his family. In return for their loyalty and affection; Robert gave each land in Granville/Bute Counties. No document has been found to prove he gave William and John land. As previously stated, John Hudson did purchase land from Robert Allen. William and John Hudson were brothers and had each married one of Robert's daughters, Susannah and Elizabeth, respectively.

The 1771 tax list for Bute County charged Robert Allin, Senr. for three taxables - 1 white poll, 2 black polls, and son, Drury Allin, in a separate household for one white poll. Robert "Allin", Jun. was also charged in a separate household for 1 white poll. [9]

In 1778 Bute County became Franklin County, North Carolina, USA.

In 1779 Franklin County went into Warren County, North Carolina, USA.

In 1781 he moved from to Caswell County, North Carolina, USA. [1]

He passed away about 1784 in Caswell County, North Carolina, USA. [10] [11]

If Robert Allen II was born 1704 that would make him 15 years old when the daughter Agnes was born. Some food for thought..

Since this is written in the biography " No document has been found that recorded the middle name Samuel." - Samuel deleted as middle name.

Katherine, I checked my own records and I have no record of a middle name of Samuel. It must have been imported with a merger. Robert Jr. is not my direct ancestor and since I am primarily my family's genealogist, I haven't had time to dive into the information surrounding collateral relatives. I can tell you that St. Peter's, New Kent has really fine records and because of its colonial importance, it happily deals with genealogists on a regular basis. (A good friend of mine is - or recently was - the Senior Warden for the parish.)

Why does this profile "say son of Thomas" in the name field BUT shows his father is Robert ?

My records do not show anything about Thomas. I have his line as Robert-Richard-Richard b. 1613, England.

there were duplicate profiles of his daughter Susannah Allen Hudson and somehow, in trying to correct one of those profiles to show Robert Allen Jr (who migrated to NC) as the correct father to this Susannah Allen Hudson ... I ended up creating a duplicate -- I have have not included any facts in this profile, since it needs to just "disapear" into Allen-5335

I will insert my Susanna Allen Hudson notes below -- but, you have already shown Susanna as a daughter of Robert Allen , Jr

SUSANNA ALLEN'S ANCESTRY (at least immediate ancestry) is clear -- however, it is debated which of the William Hudson men she married. It is clearly documented that her sister also married a John Hudson. Based on the evidence I have seen, I believe William Hudson, son of Isaac Hudson is the more likely heritage. caveat emptor -- since there is not agreement among genealogists about which Wm Hudson is Susanna Allen's husband. Conflicting views are presented in this write up. {however, evaluation of all available data indicates that Wm Hudson, son of Isaac Hudson is the correct connection and connection to Wm Hudson, son of Peter Hudson is in error) Susanna Allen is a daughter of John Allen and the wife of "a" William Hudson. opinions by good genealogist differ on which William Hudson. The DAR has found convincing that the William Hudson, father in law to Rev War Veteran James Pool (Sr.) and father to Ursula Hudson, and son of Peter Hudson was NOT MARRIED TO SUSANNA ALLEN BUT RATHER TO A "SARAH" = Many genealogist seem to have chosen Sarah Allen as the likely wife to the Wm Hudson who was son to Peter Hudson. Some show her to be wife of the Wm Hudson who was son of Isaac Hudson. I have attached, for reference, portions of a Wm Hudson bio from genealogy.com which shows Wm Hudson as son of Isaac (please go to genealogy.com for the entire paper) When Robert Allen moved from Virginia to North Carolina, William and John Hudson moved along with Robert and his family. In return for their loyalty and affection; Robert gave each land in Granville/Bute Counties. William and John were brothers and had each married one of Robert's daughters, Susannah and Elizabeth, respectively.. Source: http://members.tripod.com/~mallen4896/Index.html

Susanna (Allen) Hudson

NOTE FOLLOWING IMMEDIATELY IS NOT MY WORK, BUT EXTRACTED FROM genealogy.com "William Hudson, was the son of Isaac Hudson Sr. and grandson of Henry Hudson and wife Mary Russell. He was born about the mid 1730’s in VA. ... He died in 1809 (wtp 1813 ??) in Edgefield Co. District, South Carolina. William married in Lunengberg Co. VA., to Susannah Allen, born in VA., daughter of Robert Allen Jr. of Virginia and North Carolina When Robert Allen moved to North Carolina, William and his family moved along with the Allen’s. As stated before on Robert Allen’s page, there was a close knit family tie between William Hudson, his brother John Hudson, to Robert Allen. Of course the brothers married Allen sisters, daughters of Robert Allen, but it appeared to be much more than a father-in-law and son-in-law connection. In Bute Co. NC., Deed Book 3, December, 1768; Robert Allen deeded 200 acres to his son-in-law, William Hudson for natural love and affection and for better support. John Hudson, brother to William and Robert Allen Jr. were witness to the signing. It is known that Susannah Allen, died before her fathers will was written in 1782, but appears she died before October, 1780 in NC. October 1780 William deeded to his son Isaac Hudson for good causes and valuable consideration, the land where he lived in Granville Co. and moved to Chatham Co. where some of his other children had moved. By 1808 William had moved to Hancock Co. GA., and was living with his daughter Elizabeth and son in law, James Simmons. William’s wrote his first will which was recorded in Hancock Co. GA. but never probated. Seven months later he was in Edgefield Co. South Carolina where he wrote a new will, this will was probated in Edgefield Co. in 1813. It appears he was living with his son, Isaac Hudson who was named executor of his last will. Between the two wills his children can be identified...... . Named in the first will was: Lucy Hudson, one dollar Isaac Hudson, negro; Gloster Susannah Hudson, his riding horse Winifred Hudson, one hundred dollars Allen Hudson, one dollar Bito (daughter) bed and all furniture, this appears to be Elizabeth, since he moved all his household items to her home and left them there. In this will his son in law, James Simmons was Executor The second will was dated 25 October, 1809 and was proved in Edgefield Co. South Carolina District. Elizabeth Simmons, one feather bed and all household possessions I left with her when I moved from GA. Susannah Gibson, my riding horse and saddle Note here that Allen and Lucy were not mentioned. They lived elsewhere and did not live nearby. The daughter Winifred was deceased and the legacy which was previously bequeathed to her was given to her son, Stephen Wilson. There is no mention of Bito Hudson who was named in the first will, she may have died without marrying. Children of William and Susannah Allen Hudson are: 1. Lucy Hudson, is named in her grandfather Robert Allen's will. she died 25 July, 1825 in Giles Co. TN. She first married Isham Edwards who died in Bute Co. in 1771. In 1775 she married Thomas McKissack 2. Allen Hudson, born 23 June, 1768 VA., and died 31 August, 1824. He married Sarah Ann Myers 3. Elizabeth Hudson, also known as Bitsy was born 18 March, 1770 VA., and died 6 October, 1835 in AL. She married James Simmons 4. Isaac Hudson, died 1831 Lowndes Co. AL. 5. Winiford Hudson, married Stephen Wilson 6. Susannah Hudson, died 1836 in Monroe Co. GA. She marri ed Joseph Gibson Note on Allen Hudson: Allen and his wife Peach G. Norvell had at least seven children; all were born in Alabama. At least two of his sons, Isaac and William went to Mississippi. Isaac died 8 March, 1857 in Ms., and William died 10 January, 1862 in Winston Co. MS. WILLIAM HUDSON, b. Abt. 1739, prob. North Caroline or Virginia; d. March 13, 1813, Edgefield County, South Carolina WILLIAM9 HUDSON (ISAAC8, HENRY7, ROBERT6, RICHARD5, RICHARD4, WILLIAM3, HENRY2, HENRY1) was born Abt. 1739 in prob. North Caroline or Virginia, and died March 13, 1813 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. He married SUSANNAH P. ALLEN Abt. 1758 in Lunenberg County, Virginia. She was born Abt. 1740 in Virginia, and died Abt. 1805. More About WILLIAM HUDSON and SUSANNAH ALLEN: Marriage: Abt. 1758, Lunenberg County, Virginia Child of WILLIAM HUDSON and SUSANNAH ALLEN is: 14. i. ELIZABETH "BITO"10 HUDSON, b. March 18, 1770, Northampton County, North Carolina; d. June 10, 1835, Greene County, Alabama. END OF BIO FROM " genealogy.com" = Lunnenburg / Brunswick / Mecklenburg records show BOTH a William Hudson who was married to a Susanna and a William Hudson who was married to a Sarah. Often these two men, with the same name, living in the same area, have been confused by genealogists. "Cut and paste" work seems to be continuing to spread confused information which either mixes up these two men or combines them as if they were one man. = see deed: 9 December 1768. Robert Allen, Sr., to William Hudson, both of ButeCounty, NC for natural love and affectoin and his better support maintenance and perferment...and for 50 pds VA money, 200 acres on Billy's Creek adjoining Frohock and Hudson and a new line to ye head of Falls. Witnesses: John Hudson, Robert Allen, Jr. (Deed Bk 3:36, ButeCounty, NC). in evaluating which Wm Hudson this is, note that Wm Hudson, father of Ursula was living in Mecklenburg VA in 1762 ....this alone is strong evidence that Susanna Allen was NOT the mother of Ursula Hudson

Note that there were at least two Robert Allens living in the Lunnenburg VA area, (this from Tithes records) but her father is clearly distinguished by being the one moving to Butte / Granville NC area. Husband Wm Hudson Rcv'd gift of land from Robert Allen (brother John also given land) - deed provided at genealogy.com Susanna had brother-in law named John Hudson who married her sister. Based on this and other clues, best evidence is that these Hudson men were the sons of Isaac Hudson ( also, this Wm Hudson names a son Isaac, which, while not proof, adds evidence) Most genealogist that have this line believe that this Susanna Allen married the William Hudson who was the son of Isaac Hudson and who died in Edgefield and left an 1813 Will. 1778 Wm Hudson deed , lived near Tar River in Franklin Co NC note: Robert Hudson will dated 1782, when Ursula was marrying James Pool in Mecklenburg • note to avoid possible confusion Lunnenburg Became Brunswick and Mecklenburg Counties

  • Remarks Robert Allen moved to Granvillle in 1762 which proves he is not the father of Ursula Hudson, Polly Hudson , and Cary Hudson. He is a different William Hudson. (noted because of previous confusion between these men who lived and died in Edgefield SC at essentially the same time. A family of Allens is documented to have lived near places the Poole's lived, e/g ECC VA, Wake NC, etc. (not proved to all be the same family of Allen) there maybe a Hudson / Allen / Harris / Poole connection taking place (perhaps "allied families") over several generations at different location. After this time, a number men in the Pool family (including the family of John Pool of Edgefield SC) are shown to have given names of "Allen". This may be just coincidence - it is noted here in case others are aware of additional connections.

William Hudson, was the son of Isaac Hudson Sr. and grandson of Henry Hudson and wife Mary Russell. He was born about the mid 1730’s in VA. Some Hudson family records and recorded Books state that William Hudson is the sixth generation in VA. He died in 1809 in Edgefield Co. District, South Carolina. William married in Lunengberg Co. VA., to Susannah Allen, born in VA., daughter of Robert Allen Jr. of Virginia and North Carolina. Children of William and Susannah Allen Hudson are: • 1. Lucy Hudson, died 25 July, 1825 in Giles Co. TN. She first married Isham Edwards who died in Bute Co. in 1771. In 1775 she married Thomas McKissack Named in her grandfather Robert Allen's will 11 November 1783. "To all Christian people to whom this present writinshall come, I Robert Allen of the County of Caswell, State of North Carolina, send greetings. Know ye that I, Robert Allen, for divers and good causes and valuable considerations do give and grant unto my granddaughter Lucy McKissack of the same County, one negro girl named Charlotte. Witness: William McKissack, Jurat. (Caswell County, NC Deed Book B, page 134.) 2. Allen Hudson, born 23 June, 1768 VA., and died 31 August, 1824. He married Sarah Ann Myers

3. Elizabeth Hudson, also known as Bitsy was born 18 March, 1770 VA., and died 6 October, 1835 in AL. She married James Simmons 4. Isaac Hudson, died 1831 Lowndes Co. AL. 5. Winiford Hudson, married Stephen Wilson 6. Susannah Hudson, died 1836 in Monroe Co. GA. She married Joseph GibsonWhen Robert Allen moved to North Carolina, When Robert Allen moved to North Carolina, William and his family moved along with the Allen’s. Between the two wills his children can be identified. One thing for sure, when he moved to Ninety Six District, South Carolina other family members were living there. His brother-in-law; Josiah Allen had lived in this area before he died in the Revolutionary War. Josiah's oldest son, James married Rebecca Hudson daugher of Isaac and a grand daughter of William and Susannah Allen Hudson. This is just another twister to the Allen/Hudson family and could be a reason for William Hudson to move to South Carolina to be near his son or son(s) family.
