Biography

Beverly Allen was born in Kentucky around 1811.

He married Martha Brown sometime around 1840 and they raised at least six children: Benjamin W. Allen 1840–????, George W. Allen 1842–1938, Beverly John Allen Jr. 1844–1872, Nancy J. "Martha" Allen Pancake 1846–1864, Margaret J. Allen Ruggles 1849–1891, and James Harvey ALLEN 1853–after 1880.

Military Service Conflict: Some ancestry trees list Beverly Allen as a Civil War veteran with a widows pension filed 10 Sep 1890 by widow Annie Allen and a veteran headstone order for a cemetery near Henderson, KY dated 30 Nov 1894. This in incorrect as this Beverly Allen was white and married to Martha Allen and the above noted widows pension and military headstone order was for a black man who served in an all black unit and was married to Annie Allen. (Reference additional information below).

Death Conflict: per Find-A-Grave memorial, Beverly died 11 Jul 1911. Multiple searches online and at the Kentucky State Archives has found no additional records indicating Beverly Allen's death date/location. Per the Kentucky State Archives personnel, it is likely that Beverly Allen's death was not recorded as the laws in Kentucky changed frequently during the period he was alive. Kentucky State laws only required births, marriages and deaths to be recorded for the periods of 1852-1859, 1874-1878, and from 1911 forward. This Beverly Allen likely died during a period when recording his death was not practiced.

Burial Conflict: per Find-A-Grave memorial, Beverly died 11 Jul 1911 and is buried in the Allen-Bradley Cemetery located in Greenup County, Kentucky. I have visited this cemetery and verified that no headstone for Beverly or Martha survives in this cemetery. There are many unmarked graves in this cemetery. Detailed burial records for this cemetery have not been found. Cemetery headstone inscription records exist at the Greenup Public library in Greenup, Kentucky, however there is no mention of Beverly or Martha Allen in them. Beverly had a farm within a few miles of this cemetery so it makes since that he "might" be buried there.

I have not found any specific documentation of his birth, death or burial other than census and tax records that he lived on a farm in Greenup County, KY, so If anyone has supporting documentation of his birth, death or burial it would be appreciated if you could share it with all of us.
