DEATH. LANE.-April 4, 1930, at her residence, Orange, Alice Augusta, beloved wife of H. M. Lane, aged 31 years.

INQUEST. WOMAN ELECTROCUTED. DEFECTIVE CARPET SWEEPER. Sydney, April 11. The coroner at Orange (Mr. C. A. Arnold) held an enquiry to-day into the death of Mrs. Howard Manton Lane. Evidence was given by Mr. L. A. Lane, solicitor, a relative, that the municipal council's electrical engineer went to the house after the fatality and, in his presence, took parts of an electric carpet sweeper to pieces. He discovered that, inside the barrel of the sweeper, the flex which covered the wire carrying the current was frayed. Some of the wires touched the metal of the barrel and caused a short circuit. This had electrified the cleaner. Mr. Lane added that there was no doubt that Mrs. Lane had been electrocuted by the shock of the current passing between the carpet cleaner and the earthwire of a wireless set. The earthwire was not insulated at the point where it hung on the floor. The coroner found that Mrs. Lane's death was due to an electric shock received while she was using a defective carpet cleaner.
