Hello Corne, I see under the info on Laura Allerston, m Charles Douglas, many references to "York": I do not think these are correct, and would be grateful to see your sources for such info. Thank you, Neil Bloy; [email address removed]

Just a quick note to explain why I reverted the location of birth on the one profile. The norm for this site is to use place names (in the original language for the people concerned) as they were when the people whose profiles we make were alive, this helps the names on source documents match the names in the birth, death and marriage location fields. In the biography we then explain alternate more current location names with those original names.

On family search it is a little different where you want even the original place names to match with a reasonably current location, so I take a different approach there. They have some of the old locations there but where they don't I put the original location first and then a more recent name after so that the second location selector loads a reasonably close location for their maps while not losing the original place name.

Unfortunately you have to take a slightly different approach on both sites.

Hi Corné, apologies for the late response - regarding this message: "The following comment from Corné Giesing was posted on the WikiTree profile of Gerrit Coetzee: Voeg asseblief Hendrik Coetzee by as seun van Gerrit Coetzee Coetzee-1381 Dankie, Corné Giesing Allerston-6" my answer is "could you also take a look at Coetzee-203. He cannot be a duplicate of your Coetzee-1381  (who is currently set as father) because his parents are different, so there must be some conflation with the spouse. One what primary sources are your FamilySearch user generated source based?"

Hi Corné, I restored the bio of Smid-108. On our project pages (here, here and here) there are instructions on how to add to our communal profiles in a fashion that keeps profiles readible for everyone. Besides - there are strict rules about citing sources (Delia states on her website "You must use the correct attribution and citation, viz.: Robertson, Delia. The First Fifty Years Project. Here you add the page URL."). Sources should sort to under the Sources - heading by fashion of [named] references:

Hi Corné, I see that you have made some duplicates that now have to be merged. Please remember that many / most of the South African genealogical lines and profiles of the eigtheenth and seventeenth periods (and earlier) have already been made. Many have also been validated with primary sources. Duplicates, which is problematic because it causes a lot of unnecessary work for all inlvolved, should be avoided at all cost. When you create profiles, the system won't show duplicates already existing when the LNAB's (LastNameAtBaptism/Birth) are spelled in different ways. You need to search manually first, sort by date, and then find the already existing profiles. A few handy links:
  1. Adding to WikiTree.
  2. What are duplicates? Why should and how can they be avoided?
  3. G2G Help - for any questions you may have ....

Perhaps you would like to join the South African Roots Project ? Besides links to sources, there are help pages that might also be useful.

Hi Corné,

Thank you for self-certifying for the Pre-1700 badge! Participation in a Pre-1700 Project is strongly encouraged for those wishing to edit Pre-1700 profiles. Collaboration is essential because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants.

It looks like the South African Roots Project would be a good fit with the tag you entered. Adding the tag South_African_Roots will help you get updates about activity for that project.

Do you have any questions? Let me know. I'm happy to help! :-)

How's everything going?

Now that you have had a little time to try WikiTree, there are a few more features you may find useful.

Ideas on what to include in a profile can be found in Styles and Standards, including some tips on writing biographies.

If you need to describe an event, an heirloom or a location relevant to your research, you may like to learn about Free Space Profiles.

Lastly, sometimes you'll run into unresponsive profile managers. We have a process for resolving those unfortunate situations.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask via my profile page.

Hello Breggie,
