William was born in 1884[1] in Lowestoft, Suffolk, England. At the time of the 1891 census, he was staying with his grandmother on Whapload Road.[2] In 1901 William was aboard the Enterprise – a "dandy" (or yawl) fishing boat – for the time of the census, as eighth hand in Newlyn harbour, Cornwall, England.[3]
He married Isabella BURWOOD in 1906.[4] At the time of the 1911 census, the family lived at 57 Sussex Road (William was away).[5]
