DEATH OF MR. T. U. ALLEY.
Pioneer Gold Miner.
Mr. Trevor Underwood- Alley, who died at his son's residence at Waratah Street, Oatley, last Sunday night, at the age of 96 years, was one of the pioneering gold miners of the Araluen valley, district. He was one of the first members of the Tallagandah Shire Council, in the Braidwood district, being one of the special appointees made by the Government. A son, Major, W. U. Alley, was President of the Shire for many years.
Deceased was born in the Moss Vale district in 1844, being a son of Doctor G.U. Alley, of Shoalhaven, During the great flood in 1860 they lost their home and everything in it. At sixteen years of age deceased went to Araluen for the gold diggings, and for a time worked at Blatchford's store, where a large amount of gold-buying was carried out, there being no banks there at that time. Deceased was chosen to take part in special escorts to coaches carrying gold, and on one occasion was with a coach which was held up by the Clark gang near Major's Creek. One of the men in the escort was shot, and the bullet was taken out by Dr. Alley, with Dr. Patterson. Later, deceased worked as a private escort taking gold through Nelligen to the coast, to-be shipped to Sydney. Some trips he was in charge of gold weighing 7000 ounces, valued at nearly £30,000.
In later years the late Mr. Alley conducted a business in Araluen until twenty years ago he retired to live in Sydney. He saw the introduction, of gold dredging in the Araluen district and at one time owned the Perseverence mine. After it gave out dredging started on his property, and continued until a few years ago, there being only one dredge working now after many thousands of pounds worth of gold has been extracted. One of deceased's brothers, G. U. Alley, was a well-known identity in that district, and became known as the "grand old man of Sassafras."
Deceased's wife pre-deceased him five years, ago at the age of 86 years. He is survived by four sons and three daughters. The funeral service took place on Tuesday at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium.

EARLY DAYS

NONAGENARIAN'S MEMORIES

Mr. Trevor Underwood Alley, of Lord-street, Roseville, father of Mr. W. U. Alley, of Braidwood, last week entered the ranks of nonagenarians. He was born at Bong Bong on August 16, 1844. His parents originally came from Dublin, his father being a doctor of medicine and his mother a talented pianist and violinist. Dr. Alley practised his profession on the south coast for many years.

Mr. T. U. Alley is of a fine pioneering type and from a vivid memory of the past has many interesting stories to tell of experiences on the south coast. Among these may be placed the great flood of I860, when the home in which the family lived on Burraga Island, near Terara, was washed away.

When Mr. Alley was 16 years of age the family took up residence at Araluen. There he found employment in Blatchford's store. Part of the business of this firm was to buy gold, for it was in the days when gold was being won from rich alluvial fields there. As there were no banks at Araluen, it was necessary for an armed escort to take the gold to Braidwood. The monthly purchase was generally 4000 ounces, and such a prize as this was a tremendous temptation to bushrangers. Mr. Alley remembers the hold-up of the escort by the Clarke gang. During this exciting episode one of the police was shot, the bullet being subsequently extracted by Drs. Alley and Patterson. The efforts of the bushrangers were frustrated by the cunning of another officer, who took cover under the wagon and put the enemy to flight. Shortly after this, Mr. Alley, aged 24 years, became the leader of a private escort, and he, with five others, took the gold through 30 miles of rough country to the port of Nelligen, where it was shipped to Sydney in the charge of a constable. On one of these journeys Mr. Alley was responsible for the safety of 7000 ounces.

Mr. Alley remembers many election incidents, and speaks of the famous pickhandle election. At this time there were 14,000 people in the Araluen area, and the contest was waged between the sitting member, Mr. Edward Greville, and Mr. W. M. Kelly. Feeling ran high, and when the supporters of Mr. Kelly endeavored to win votes for their champion by the use of pick-handles, excitement was intense. From the effects of such belaboring one man eventually died. The result of the election was the defeat of Mr. Greville, but the election was upset, and Mr. Greville again became the representative in Parliament.

Mr. Alley retired from active business about 25 years ago. Four years ago Mr. and Mrs Alley celebrated the diamond jubilee of their marriage, and both are still enjoying life. Although 80 years of age, Mr. Alley travels to and from Sydney to transact his business affairs. He is a keen gardener, and is fond of a game of billiards.
