Biography

Death of Mr. A. Alleyn (1942, June 12). Daily Advertiser (Wagga Wagga, NSW : 1911 - 1954), p. 2. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article144168543 Death of Mr. A.Alleyn WELL KNOWN SHEEP-BREEDER Profound regret was expressed in Wagga and district last night when it was learned that the death had occurred at his home, "Alleynside," Downside, of Mr. Abram (Abe) Alleyn. Mr. Alleyn, who was aged 61 years, bad been in fairly good health until the beginning of the year, when he suffered a slight stroke, after which he went for a holiday of two months in South Australia. He came back refreshed and attacked his work with vigor. He seemed in the best of health, and his sudden death yesterday afternoon came as a great shock to his family.Mr. Abe Alleyn was one of the best known figures in agriculture in the Wagga district. Not only was he a keen agriculturist but a noted breederof Dorset Horn sheep, and a man of great character and genial disposition. He was always ready to give a helping hand to others, and his advice on matters affecting rural pursuits, especially sheep raising and wheat-growing, was keenly sought after by many primary producers. Mr. Alleyn was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Alleyn. of Millicent (S.A.) and was born at Millicent. He spent his boyhood days in the south eastern part of South Australia, and at the age of 17 years went to Western Australia, where he did pick and shovel work on a new railway line, and where water had to be carted for several miles. Later he returned to the Millicent district, and took on a farm on shares with his brother William. They were the first men to use the Massey-Harris binder in the south eastern part of the State (S.A.) Mr.Alleyn came to the Wagga district In 1907. He applied for a block on the Gobbagumbalin subdivision, and was successful in the ballot, but it was considered then that his block of land was among the poorest on the estate.By hard work and good management Mr. Alleyn made the block, together with other land since acquired, into one of the best properties in the Wagga district. Mr. Alleyn was a keen believer in good farming practice, and was a regular entrant in the M.P. and A.A.growing crop competitions, in which he always was highly placed. He was also a great supporter of the junior farmers' movement, in which he encouraged his sons to take an active part. But it was his establishment of the "Alleynside" Dorset Horn sheep stud which was perhaps Mr. Alleyn's crowning achievement in a very active and useful life. He had always been interested in fat lamb raising, and made several experiments to discover which breed of sheep was the most suitable for his country. He came to the conclusion that the Dorset Horns were the best and with the late Mr. Percy A Mills, went to Lake Bolac (V.), in 1928 to select 25 Dorset Horn ewes and a ram from Messrs. A. Knight and Sons' Stud. These were the nucleus of his now famous stud. By scientific breeding and wise management his Dorset Horn stud was built up to be one of the leading studs for that breed of sheep in Australia. His sheep won many championships in the metropolitan shows in Melbourne and Sydney.Mr. Alleyn was also a noted judge of sheep, and acted as Judge for fat sheep and Dorset Horns in Melbourne and other shows. He was a member of the N.S.W branch of the Australian Society of Breeders of British Sheep and was also a member of the Federal Council of that body. He was a member of the M.P. and A.A. for many years, and was a vice-president for several terms. In addition to the wheat growing competitions, Mr.Alleyn was also placed highly in the fallow competitions, and in the State Master Farm competitions. In district affairs, also, Mr. Alleyn was prominent. He was the first president of the Downside Hall Committee, and was also a member of the committee of the Downside recreation ground. He was the first secretary—a position which he occupied until his death— of St. Edwards' Church of England, The Gap, and was also treasurer for a long term. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge Harmony, Wagga, also of the M.U.I.O.O.F.In 1910 Mr. Alleyn married Miss Beatrice Lannan, of Milllcent. The ceremoney took place at Millicent, and Mr.Alleyn brought his young bride to Downside, where, three years before, he had begun to carve out a life for himself which was to prove so successful. Mrs. Alleyn died about 3½ years ago, and Mr. Alleyn is survived by six children, Messrs. John Alleyn.of Tenandra Park, Gundagai; I.A.C. Austin Alleyn. of the R.A.A.F., stationed in N.S.W.; Irvine (Sam) Alleyn. of Sunshine (V.), and Thomas Alleyn.of "Alleynside." and Misses Betty and Joan Alleyn, of 'Alleynside,' to whom the sympathy of the entire community will be extended. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon. The cortege will move from St John's Church of England, Wagga, after a short service beginning at 2 o'clock, for the Wagga cemetery.
