Biography

Oliver was born before 1560. He was the son of Edward Alleyn from Willen in Buckinghamshire and his wife, Margaret Townley. He was a brother of the famous Elizabethan actor, Edward Alleyn.[1]

Nothing more is known about Oliver with any certainty not even his place of birth. He could have been born in Willen before the family moved to the City of London or he might have been born after the family relocated to Bishopsgate Ward. His father was an innholder and porter to Queen Elizabeth I. An Oliver Allen was buried at St Botolph's church in Bishopsgate on 13 December 1563.[2] [3] It is not certain that this record relates to Oliver Alleyn but it is certainly plausible.

Research Note

Parish records for Willen, in the hundred of Newport (Pagnell) did not begin until 1665. Bishop's Transcripts go back as far as 1575 but only for selected years. The volume of baptism records for St Botolph's, Bishopsgate, which included that purported to be of Edward Alleyn and some of his siblings begins at the end of 1558. It is not clear whether there was an earlier volume in which Oliver's baptism might have been recorded. The baptism of the oldest putative sibling in the same volume as Edward's was in 1560. Therefore, it seems reasonable to assume that Oliver was born before this date. Eady-184 14:45, 21 May 2022 (UTC), modified Eady-184 13:56, 24 May 2022 (UTC)
