Biography

Joan was the daughter of Richard Alleyne of Derby.^[1] Her birth date is not known, but her son John was born in 1567,^[2] so she was likely to have born herself before 1552.

Joan married Thomas Smith of Hoby, Leicestershire.^[1] They had two known children:

• John, antiquary and Member of Parliament^[1][2]
• a daughter whose husband was Stephen Fowler of Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, and whose daughter Mary married her cousin, Joan's grandson Thomas Smyth^[3]

Joan's husband settled in Hoby, Leicestershire.^[1]
