"New Light" Evangelist. Henry Alline (pronounced Allen) was baptized June 14, 1748, the son of William Alline and his second wife Rebecca Clarke of Newport, Rhode Island[1] [2]
In 1760, the family emigrated to Nova Scotia, where they were among the founders of Falmouth[3] [2] [4] [5] [6] . The sources here detail his youth, and the limits to his education. Due to his location, and the American Revolution, he was unable to attend university, although he wished to do so.
On 19 April 1776, he became a lay minister, and travelled to other settlements around the Minas Basin, including Fort Cumberland[7]. His evangelical messages were related to those referred to as the Great Awakening and resonated with many of the settlers, although not all. On 6 April 1779 was he ordained an evangelist by three Annapolis valley churches, and began to travel farther, to communities such as Liverpool[8], which he visited several times. His travels took him throughout Nova Scotia, including the settlements in what is now New Brunswick and in 1782 he also visited St John’s (Prince Edward) Island. He founded many churches along the way, comprised of those who chose to follow his "New Light" movement, however he remained controversial and many of his followers disagreed with the principles set out in his printed works.
Henry Alline did not marry or father children, however he contracted tuberculoses during his travels.
With the close of the American Revolution in 1783, he was able to travel to New England, however he fell ill in January 1784 while he was preaching in North Hampton, New Hampshire. On February 2, 1784 he died in the home of Reverend David McClure, and was buried in the church cemetery there[9].
