Biography

John S. Alling, son of Leverett Alling and Fanny (Atwater) Alling, born in Hamden, New Haven County, Connecticut, March 1824; died Hamden, New Haven County, Connecticut, 4 February 1867, age 43; buried Hamden Plains Cemetery, Hamden.[1][2][3][4][5]

4 Sep 1850. U.S. Federal Census. The Alling family living in Hamden, New Haven County, Connecticut. Head of household Leverett Alling, age 54, farmer, real estate $800; [wife] Fanny, age 50; [son] John, age 26, idiotic; [son] George A., age 16, laborer, attended school; [son] Harvey M., age 8, attended school; son Charles E., age 4. All born in Connecticut.[1]

John is mentioned in the Last Will and Testament of his mother Fanny Alling dated 25 September 1858.

In the Hamden Plains Cemetery, Hamden, New Haven County, Connecticut, the monument with John's inscription reads[5]:

JOHN S. ALLING
DIED FEB. 4, 1867
AE 43.

Research Notes

  • In my files I had a note for John which reads: "John S. Alling b Hamden, res Hamden. single. d 4 FEB 1867 ag 42-11-0. Refers to Vol 4 pp. 18-19. Cause: disease of the brains." And a source of "1867-1903, Page 3". However, when I tried to find this quote and source, I was unable to do so.
  • Slight discrepancy concerning John's age at death. Was he 42 years and 11 months, or 43?
