For a short period he taught school in Jeferson County, PA. He began to study medicine under Dr.s McEwen and Ansley of Plumville. He graduated from the Thomas Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia on March 4, 1867. He opened a practice on May 13, 1867 in Cookport and continued to reside there for 13 years. In 1880 he moved his practice to Marion Center and also opened a drug store there until 1889 when he moved to Indiana. He retired from practice in 1907.
As staunch member of the Democratic party, he was appointed postmaster of Marion Center and was a member of council and the school board. He also became burgess o Marion Center. He was a member of the Gilgal Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. He belonged to the I. O. O. F. lodge at Cookport and was a past grand of that lodge. For a period in 1863, he enlisted in Company B, 62nd Regiment of the Pa. Militia. [1]
