Biography

There is a conflict with the birth and family of Catherine Allison Baxter. Her death certificate states she was born in 1818 to Posey Ellison and Betty Ricketts. The information on her death certificate was given by her son Jesse E Baxter. This was a conflict with the known wife of Posey Ellison who was Lavina Halford. There is documentation of the marriage of Posey and Levina Halford on 7 Oct 1817 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. With the date of birth of Catherine on her death certificate as being 4 Mar 1818 it must be wrong because Posey and Lavina were newly married only 5 months before Catherine was reported by her son as being born. The only logical answer to this is that Jesse E Baxter was wrong on his recollection of his mothers birth day (at least the year) and to the name of her mother. This is understandable because Posey and Lavina had moved to Georgia before Jesse was born. To reinforce this further I found a document written on the 25th of June 1904 where Catherine Allison Baxter swore to an official of the government that she was 80 years old at the time and was the wife of Aaron F Baxter (deceased) who fought in the Civil War with the 49th North Carolina Troops, Company A. Also that she was still a resident of McDowell Co. NC and had not remarried after the death of Arron F Baxter. The pension was accepted and she received 300 dollars per year as payment for his service. As you see the date of birth runs from 1818 to now 1824. We look at the census of 1820 thru 1840 and see that Posey and Levina had a daughter that would fall in to the above date range. By 1850 Catherine was married and Posey and Levina moved to Georgia. With all the information studied I think Jesse E Baxter had the wrong information for the birth and mother of his mother Catherine Ellison (Allison) Baxter. She shows up in Posey and Lavina's census from birth to 1840 and she was married by the 1850 census. Her children never met their grandparents on her side so would have no recollection of them. There is no documentation of Posey Jr marriage to any other wife than Levina Halford. I think Catherine was born around 1820 for her to appear in the 1800 census for her parents but for now I am leaving her dob as her son stated. Her true dob probably is 4 Mar 1819.
