Reference Note

It appears that the following account (originally published in, Notes and Queries, Historical and Genealogical: Chiefly Relating to Interior Pennsylvania, Volume 3. 1896. Edited by William Henry Egle [1]) of John Allison of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, from, Immigrant ancestors; a list of 2,500 immigrants to America before 1750 (published 1963), page 43, by Frederick Adams Virkus, combined four unrelated Allison families into one:

"ALLISON, JOHN (b. Londonderry, Ireland - d. • At the Allison/Ellison Y-DNA Project [2], descendants of Group J and an Ungrouped individual (ID 142915) both claim John Allison (d. about 1728) of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, as their ancestor. The majority of the children cited above, attributed to John Allison who died in 1747, were actually children of John Allison who died about 1728.
  • John Allison who died in 1747, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, was this person:

John Allison lived in Derry Township, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He married Jeanet ?. He died in 1747, in Derry Township. John’s will was written on April 4, 1747, and probated on May 15, 1747. John owned land in Virginia. The executor of the estate was John’s wife Jeanet. The witnesses were James McCollough/McCullough and William Breden. John Allison could not write.

Children:

  1. Robert
  2. Jean
  3. Isabel
  4. Margaret
  5. Jeanet
  6. James

  • At the Allison/Ellison Y-DNA Project [3], descendants of Group C claim William Allison, who married Grizzle Wray, as their ancestor.
  • James Allison, son of James and Rebecca, did not marry. He was cited as marrying “Miss Howard”. However, the James Allison who married Rebecca Howard (a daughter of Gordon Howard), died intestate by March 15, 1768, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. This James Allison was a son of Richard Allison. Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Deed Book Q, page 225, confirms that Rebecca Howard married James Allison who died by 1768.
  • A more in depth analysis of the above discussion was done by Mel Allison in, “Handbook For The Descendants Of John Allison, The Elder The Scotch-Irish Emigrate From Londonderry, Ireland. Updated: Jan. 15, 2015.”
