NC estate file Catherine Conner against John M Conner adm of John C Allred (dec). .... it is alleged by plaintff lived & dwelt in the house of defendants interstate in the capacity of servant, where in fact she was admitted as a member of the family, for her own protection and benefit she being a widow and daughter of defendants intestate. Catherine claimed in the spring of 1863, she, her son & 2 daughters went into the service of the defendants intestate. That from 1863 until 23 Aug. 1873, they were continuously in the service of the defendants intestate and his family. Now paraphrasing, her mother was sick and confused for 12 months and finally died. Her father was sick and confined to a sick bed for 17 months having been stricken with paralysis from the effects which he died on the 23 day of Aug. 1873. During the greatest part of the time from spring 1863 until their deaths the care & management of affairs both of farm and house fell on her family. That during both of her parents illnesses the constant care fell on her & her family. During all of the said time, she made the clothing, did the washing, performed all the work and labor of general housekeeping for the family. The service rendered to the family was for 8 years and worth one dollar a week. And for the time the family was sick, about 3 years, worth one dollar fifty cents per week. No compensation for said service was rendered. Catherine demanded the sum of six hundred dollars. At trial she was awarded $525 on 26 June 1874. Balance of estate for distribution $216 To be divided by 12 for sum $18 each.
