Biography

Frances (Fanny) was the daughter of Thomas Allsop (1757-1839) and Frances (Fanny) Bridden (1776-1849). She was born June 27, 1806, and baptised June 29, in Fenny Bentley, Derbyshire. She had a sister named Jane, born 1823, who married Samuel Wright.

Before she married Thomas Redfern in 1850, the fecund Frances had given birth to the following children: William Allsop ( b.1847, who possibly m. Emma Mead - there was another Wm Redfern of the same age from the region who was the son of John Redfern as noted on the marriage record); Rachel (1827-1883 m. Samuel Allen); Henry (b. 1836, possibly died in 1861); Emma (1835-1895 m. Thomas Jenkinson); Hannah (1846-1861).

When Frances married Thomas Redfern, she was listed as a spinster.

Frances and Thomas Redfern had one child together: Francis (Frank) Redfern (1851-1903 m. Sarah Ann ? and had several children).

In 1841, three of Frances's children, Rachel, Emma, and Henry, can be seen staying with her widowed mother (pauper) in Fenny Bentley. On the same page at a different household is a Francis Alsop, age 30, and her 7 months daughter Agnes whose father was evidently a Richard Alsop. It's difficult to say whether this is the same Frances. Perhaps someday DNA matches will help sort out the father(s) of Fanny's children. When daughter Rachel married Samuel Allen, records appear which say her father was William Fletcher. Could this William Fletcher be somehow related to the first wife of Fanny's husband Thomas Redfern who married Elizabeth Fletcher? However, when daughter Emma married, she indicated Thomas Redfern as her father, which he was, in a sense, but likely not her birth father.

In 1861 son William Allsop was staying with William and Mary Frost. Also present was 4 year old William Allen. This record was a little gold mine for family information because it turns out Mary Frost was another one of Fanny's sisters. William Allen was actually a great nephew and the son of Fanny's daughter who married Samuel Allen.
