Sarah was born in 1860 [1], she was baptised on 7 September 1862 in Belper, Derbyshire. Her parents were Thomas and Mary Allsop. [2]
The family lived at Lynams Row, Bridge Hill in Belper and Thomas was a Nail Maker [3]. By the time Sarah was 12, her father had died; her mother was making nails to earn money for the family and Sarah was working in a cotton factory in Belper [4]. The work would have been dangerous and the hours long, even though the Factories Act 1847 prevented women and children from working more than 10 hours a day or 58 hours a week. [5]. In Victorian England children, because of their size, would crawl under and around the machinery, scavenging the valuable cotton from the floor and cleaning up dust and oil. Accidents were common:
On the 6th of March 1865 a very melancholy accident befell a lad named Joseph Foden about 13 years of age. While engaged sweeping under a Mule his head was caught between the Roller beam and the carriage – as the latter was putting up – and completely smashed, death being instantaneous[6]
Sarah gave birth to an illegitimate daughter, Mabel Ann Allsop, in Parwich [7][8] and was baptised in Brassington (3 miles away) on 19 May 1898. [9] It is unknown who Mabel's father was.
Sarah met and later married the widowed miller, Herbert Handley, in Brassington in 1900. Sarah was 9 years younger than her new husband [10]. The couple lived in Brassington and had several children:
Jane Margeret Handley Daughter Female 3 Brassington, Derbyshire
Herbert Samuel Wint Nephew Male 23 Brassington, Derbyshire
