Biography

Carlos Almanza was born on 18 October 1919 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico to Rafael Almanza and Atanasia Linan.[1] He married Maria Teofila Medrano; they had 8 children. According to his Alien Draft Registration application, he arrived in Alamo, Texas by boat in 1921; as of 1942 he was had been living in Weslaco, Texas and was still a Mexican citizen. At the time, he was 5'3" and 140 lbs. with black hair and brown eyes. He had a 3rd grade education and was employed pulling cotton bolls.[2] Carlos died on 17 April 2000 and is buried next to his wife at San Juan Cemetery.[3][4]

Carlos Almanza Sr., 80, passed away Monday, April 17, 2000, at McAllen Medical Center in McAllen. He was born Oct. 18, 1919, in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. He was a lifetime resident ef Weslaco.
He is survived by his wife, Teofila Medrano Almanza of Weslaco; three sons, Carlos Almanza Jr. of Manfield, Texas, Marcos Almanza of Ogelby, III., and Juan Almanza of Pasadena, Texas; five daughters, Julia A. Garcia of San Juan, Bertha A. Leal of Weslaco, Juanita A. Gonzalez of Ana, Texas, Theresa A. Guerra of Pasadena, Texas and Maria A. Zavala of Lakeworth, Florida; brother, Luciano Almanza of Weslaco; 25 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Ramon Almanza, in 1999; and a son-in-law, Antonio Garcia, in 1998.
Funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at San Martin Catholic Church in Weslaco. Burial will follow at San Juan Cemetery in San Juan. Hawkins Funeral Home in Weslaco is in charge of arrangements.[5]
