Biography

Clara was born in England in 1854 and migrated to Australia when aged 2 years. The family consisting of her father Charles mother Hannah and two brothers Charles Henry aged 9 years and William aged 6 years departed from the port of Plymouth on12th January 1857 on the ship “Carnatic”arriving in South Australia on 18th April 1857 and the family initially lived in the suburb of Port Adelaide.

At age 19 years, Clara Almond and Adam Whitehill aged 31 years married on 14th August 1874 at the home of Mrs Whitehill, Sturt St Adelaide witnesses were J O Croucher watchmaker Port Adelaide and M Whitehill Sturt St Adelaide. There was one child born from the marriage. William Charles Whitehill born March 1875 Portland Estate district Port Adelaide

Adam was an engineer by profession and he and Clara took up redidence in the district of Port Adelaide. By 1882 they had moved to Queenstown then finally to Buller Tce Alberton although at that time it was named Buller Street Yatala, then later, Buller Street Rossatala Port Adelaide.

Clara’s mother Hannah passed away on 14th October 1888 aged 82 years and her funeral departed from the Whitehill residence Buller St, for the Alberton Cemetery.

Both Adam and Clara passed away while living at Buller Tce. Adam passed away 1st August 1893 aged 50 years – Clara passed away 15th February 1914 aged 59 years.

Adam and Clara are interred in Cheltenham Cemetery. Location - drive B path 15 East. The Whitehill site is on northern side of path 15. The old headstone has a number of Whitehill names but not Adam’s or Clara’s.
