He died aged 43 years from carbon monoxide poisoning at 79 Battams Rd, Royston Park, South Australia, Australia, on 29 November 1952 and a funeral service was conducted at Cheltenham Cemetery, South Australia, on 1st December 1952. Location of interment: Cheltenham Cemetery, Section O, Drive C, Path (#) 9(34), Site number 335S (Interment Right is expired)

James residence at time of death is uncertain as the official death record shows place of residence as 79 Battams Rd, Royston Park, South Australia, the location of his death, and Cheltenham Cemetery Records list his last abode as Largs Bay, South Australia.

A death notice inserted in the Adelaide Advertiser when his mother died in 1958 indicates he was married at the time of his death as does his death record, but no marriage record was found.
